IG KANJA JOINS CS MURKOMEN IN CONSULTATIVE MEETING WITH IEBC ON ELECTION PREPAREDNESS
The Inspector General of the National Police Service, Mr. Douglas Kanja, today, 15th May 2025, joined the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, the Hon. Kipchumba Murkomen, in a high-level consultative meeting with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) at Sankara Hotel, Westlands, Nairobi.
The engagement comes at a critical time for strengthening inter-agency collaboration and coordination to ensure peaceful, credible, secure, and successful elections. Discussions focused on election security preparedness, institutional coordination, early warning mechanisms, electoral violence prevention, and the enhancement of operational frameworks ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
In his remarks, the Cabinet Secretary reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the IEBC in executing its constitutional mandate in a professional, impartial, and non-partisan manner. He noted that the Ministry remains fully prepared to facilitate a peaceful and credible electoral process through coordinated security measures and stakeholder engagement.
The Cabinet Secretary further highlighted key areas addressed during the meeting, including the implementation of the 2027 Election Security Preparedness Framework, strengthening early warning systems, hotspot mapping, inter-agency communication structures, prevention of political and electoral violence, disruption of criminal gangs and networks, management of cyber security threats, combating misinformation and fake news, and addressing cross-border and transnational security threats.
During the meeting, the Inspector General emphasised the critical role of the National Police Service in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process. He outlined measures already undertaken by the Service to ensure that the upcoming elections remain peaceful, secure, free, and fair.
IG Kanja reiterated the Service’s unwavering commitment to securing the electoral process and safeguarding Kenya’s democratic stability throughout the pre-election, election, and post-election periods.
The Chairperson of the IEBC, Mr. Erastus Edung Ethekon, thanked CS Murkomen and IG Kanja for their continued support and collaboration with the Commission. He described the engagement as timely and necessary, emphasising that delivering free, fair, and credible elections is a collective national responsibility requiring the support of all government agencies and stakeholders.
Also present at the meeting were the Principal Secretary in the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr. Raymond Omollo; the Principal Secretary for Immigration and Citizen Services, Dr. Belio Kipsang; NPS Secretary Administration and Accounting Officer, Ms. Bernice Lemedeket; DIG KPS, Mr. Eliud Lagat; DIG APS, Mr. Gilbert Masengeli; the Director of Criminal Investigations, Mr. Mohamed Amin; Director of Operations, APS, Mr. Jackson Kangani, SAIG; and the Director Corporate Communications/ NPS Spokesperson, Mr. Muchiri Nyaga, AIG, among other senior officials.
