When I first got into crypto, I honestly thought that “everything being public onchain” was a huge advantage. Full transparency, anyone can verify, no hidden games. Sounds great in theory. But the longer you stay in this space, the more you notice a pretty obvious problem: no normal person wants their entire financial life to be public. In Web2, privacy is the default. Banks don’t show your balance to strangers. Social apps don’t make your private messages public. Most data stays private unless you choose otherwise. Web3 flipped that completely. One wallet ends up representing everything you do: money, DeFi, NFTs, DAOs, games, even social activity. If someone knows your address, they can trace your whole onchain history. That might be fine for experiments, but it’s not a foundation for real finance or real people. This is why the idea behind confidential blockchains, and what @zama is building, really matters. Confidential blockchains don’t try to hide everything blindly. They start with the most sensitive thing first: money. Confidential money means you can transact onchain without exposing balances, transaction history, or who paid who. The system is still verifiable, but the data isn’t broadcast to the world. That’s not radical, it’s just how finance has always worked. Once money becomes private, the rest of finance can actually function properly. DeFi today is fragile because it’s too transparent. Traders get copied, whales get tracked, treasuries get watched in real time. Confidential finance makes lending, trading, payroll, and treasury management usable without turning users into targets. But the vision doesn’t stop at finance. Identity is another huge piece. In most of Web3, your wallet is your identity, and that’s a bad design. In real life, you don’t use the same identity for everything. Confidential identity lets you prove something about yourself without revealing all your personal data. You can prove eligibility, compliance, or rights without exposing who you are. You prove facts, not files. Governance is the same story. Public voting sounds transparent, but it creates pressure, influence, and manipulation. Real governance works because votes are private and results are public. Confidential governance allows DAOs to operate more like real institutions, not public polls where everyone can see who voted what. The most important line in Zama’s message, in my opinion, is that confidentiality is now possible onchain. For a long time, this wasn’t a design choice, it was a technical limitation. Developers couldn’t build private apps even if they wanted to. Now that limitation is starting to disappear. And that’s why most blockchain applications still haven’t been built yet. What we see today is just the first layer, created under heavy constraints. When confidentiality becomes a primitive, an entirely new class of applications becomes possible: real onchain banks, private payroll systems, compliant enterprise apps, fair governance systems, and social platforms that don’t treat user data as public property. Confidential blockchains aren’t a niche. They’re a requirement if Web3 wants to grow beyond speculation and early adopters.
