I was honored to be invited to a special viewing of the premiere of the Dateline NBC episode about the murder of Tara Baker and the long road her family and friends had to endure to finally get justice with the conviction of Edrick Faust earlier this year. Sadly all who were invited had to keep the event quiet due to the backlash and disgraceful things said and done to the Baker family and Chris Melton both during and after the trial. There’s so much to say! One of the first people I spotted was Chris Melton standing back alone from the group that gathered that included the Baker family, Tara’s friends and sorority sisters, some jurors and investigators that helped solve the case along with some local advocates for Tara and the Baker family. I walked over to Chris and I apologized to him for his loss of Tara and for all that he has had to endure for so long. I have to tell you he is the kindest and most sincere person. I immediately knew why Tara loved him so much. Meeting him in person versus watching him testify or even on Dateline does not give you the true feeling of who he is and knowing that there was no way this person killed Tara. The episode was done so well. I had not ever seen the extent of the damage that had been done and what a difficult crime scene this was. Correspondent Blayne Alexander did a fantastic job with telling the story of what the family endured to showing what was happening in our community with some seeking to tear apart this amazing place and willing to say such horrific things about the Bakers and Chris and insisting that the family didn’t get justice. Tara’s sister Meredith shared with me that not only was Blayne great but that she found the fountain of youth as she shared her age with me. I could tell the family felt grateful for her coverage and that she helped them to feel so at ease. I’m so honored that I get to share my dogged advocacy for murder victims with my friend Cameron Jay Harrelson. Sadly we met through Tara’s case and the murder of my friend Daniel Macias that has yet to be solved nearly 10 years later. We text each other so much with thoughts, ideas, frustrations. He put on the event this evening that as you can see was beautiful. He is also championing people to donate to The Tara Baker Memorial Scholarship and to SANE a cause supporting victims of sexual assault that is very important to the Bakers. While there are unfortunately some attorneys who have taken a wrong turn in their profession and bring great harm to the family and friends of murder victims, I recognize that Tara had the drive to become an attorney with integrity. Her scholarship will help other law students at UGA to follow in that same positive path in the legal profession. After the episode ended I got to speak with some of the amazing investigators that never let go of their ties to Tara and her family. We talked about not being surprised that Ahmad Crews, Tara’s killer’s attorney chose not to speak. I learned when they knew he was bungling this case. In opening when he said Tara left the gift of holding Caucasian hair in her hand. The hair was Tara’s. The jury was on to what he was about Day One. I left feeling glad that the episode showed how damaging the naysayers have been to the Bakers yet Tara’s mother held in emotions out of respect to Faust’s mother. I also left knowing that those incredible investigators are very much working on Daniel’s case and they were glad they could share that with me. I have hope for the Macias family. But sadly I know that the Bakers and Chris Melton are nowhere near done with the people who choose to ignore facts and truth and spew nastiness about them. They are close to my heart as I fight to stop the content creators contributing to it. And yes Melanie, the GBI agents prefer to be called Liz and Jeremy! Finally, check out the episode!
