#americanfamilyinsurance My displeasure of this insurance company. In January of 2025 they raised my insurance on my home $400 more per year. In august of 2025 they raised it again. Now I’m being told that it’s slated to go up again.

But my criticism goes beyond aesthetics: sycophancy undermines sound leadership—a lesson I’ve learned through work in businesses, nonprofits, and academia, from tiny startups to billion-dollar corporations. At their core, organizations are information-processing systems. Their success depends on accurately gathering signals—good and bad—and making decisions accordingly. This demands a culture of unvarnished honesty. Leaders must insist on the immediate sharing of bad news, proper attribution of good ideas, and rigorous questioning of assumptions. Credit should not be stolen or misdirected, and mistakes should not be hidden. Only through forthrightness can an organization remain nimble, responsive, and innovative. Sycophancy corrodes this culture by rewarding flattery over truth. When currying favor becomes the surest path to status, unwelcome truths go unspoken. While some may resist, most take the path of least resistance and placate those above them. As a result, critical information about failures or risks surfaces too late. Decisions suffer, and the collective mission falters. A leader who demands praise over honest insight fosters an environment where performance inevitably declines. Trump’s admiration for sycophancy is not just personally revolting but operationally disastrous. In any strong organization—whether a startup or a national government—intellectual honesty must prevail. Sycophancy is its unambiguous enemy, and its rise signals a system in decline.
