(blog) phys.org/news/2025-10-c…

So excited that our first major empirical @TheManyBirds paper is now out in @PLOSBiology! Leading this big team science project, with our excellent core leadership team, is a labour of love for me, delighted to see our hard work over the past 4 years has reached this point!

This landmark collaboration united 129 researchers from 82 institutions across 24 countries 🌎 The #ManyBirds Project shows how open, global science can uncover the ecological drivers of behaviour & evolution, complementing critical single-lab work. 🔗 themanybirds.com

Two key ecological factors predicted neophobia: 🥗 Diet – specialists were more fearful than generalists. 🧭 Migration – migratory species were more cautious than residents. ➡️ Supporting both the Neophobia Threshold & Dangerous Niche Hypotheses.

Using standardised tests, birds were offered familiar food with & without a novel object. ⏱️ Longer hesitation = higher neophobia. Result: huge variation across species - from cautious flamingos 🦩 to bold falcons 🦅! (Photo credit: @JimeLOISM)

Neophobia - fear of novelty - helps animals balance risk & opportunity. But why are some species more fearful of novelty than others? 🤔 Our global team tested 1,439 birds from 136 species across 25 orders to find out! #AnimalBehaviour #BigTeamScience

Do you like to dip your fries in ketchup before eating it? Our cockatoos do too! In a new study, we showed our cockatoos innovated a new way to flavour their food: they dunk noodles in blueberry soy yoghurt. Read about it and watch our video abstract: cell.com/current-biolog…
