Given we anticipate the end point of a run and pace ourselves accordingly, we have an inbuilt safeguard in place to monitor our bodies and 'protect' us from real or perceived harm. One of the ways we protect ourselves is by the sensation of fatigue.

Without fatigue we would have no 'stopping' mechanism before we hurt ourselves by exercise depletion. Therefore by manipulating our sense of fatigue, research has sought to explore the ability to boost or inhibit performance by turning up or down or protection need.

...This idea can be seen in the finishing times of marathons where we see an uptick in people finishing around specific milestones (eg, 3 hrs or 4 hrs). People are anticipating performance and judging their fatigue off an external input of the desire to finish within a set time..

From the concept of teleoanticipation where we anticipate how much resources we will spend over the course of a run and set our pace accordingly comes the idea that we predetermine a lot of our performance...

The idea is that we have the end in mind when we set out to exercise and regulate our pace according to how far there is to go. We do this to keep ourselves within what we believe is a safe zone for ourselves to finish the run. Fatigue sensations plays a role in this safeguarding

Following on from the last few days is this offering from Baden et al. google.com/url?sa=t&sourc… This paper works through the concept of teleo-anticipation which was first introduced by Ulmet in 1996. 1/2

..how we have a preconceived belief of how our performance will be when we set off for a run based on previous experience. The more the experience, the better the prediction should be. Interesting though for starting to think about limits we may impose on ourselves.

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28576664/ This article by Friston 2017 starts the journey off. Heavy reading but some great points relevant to setting the scene. Basically, it states that we have prior beliefs that we build up over the course of our lives. 1/n

2/2 I will throw out right at the start my personal bias which is to see fatigue as an output sensation from the brain which acts as a threat protector rather than a straight input from the peripheral system.
