@uwinnipeg had a great talk as part of UW community lecture series at the Portsmouth. I learned as much from a wonderful group as I was able to share!

@Wesmenathletics @uwinnipeg Reconciliation is a long pathway walked by many. Small gestures advance the work needed in big ways while a drum and song offer a powerful start.

@cityofwinnipeg @DowntownWpgBIZ walked from former Bay to Portage and Main on a warm, hazy Friday.... 1130am. Decided to count folks walking, sitting or waiting for the bus. I'd say about 225 people... How do we get back to more people and less empty storefronts??

@bpincott @emmaewood Anything we can do to protect and expand quality affordable housing is a good thing! PS, I'd be happy to visit Portland...never been there.

@emmaewood @JinoDistasio Great piece, Dino. Years ago I visited Portland to see their success in addressing homelessness. They put in place a “not net loss” policy for SRO’s. As old SRO’s were converted new SRO’s were added & operated by NFP’s. SRO’s were an important part of their housing first model.

@WestEndCassidy When my dad arrived in Winnipeg in the 50s, he lived for a number of years at the Savoy Hotel while working for the railroad. It was a time when the SRO was an option. Those days have faded but there always remains potential.

@JinoDistasio 1/2 I agree that the state of SROs today makes them unsalvageable. It’s unfortunate, as not long ago there were many more options for people on the lowest rung of the housing ladder (single people, newcomers to town, retired individuals) such as rooming houses, boarding houses...

@WestEndCassidy Agree fully. We have written much about the historical context and their role such as being good options for seniors or younger workers.

@JinoDistasio 2/2 SROs. At one point tens of 1000s lived in them. We’ve legislated them out of existence because they offended people's suburban sensibilities. Now you pretty much need government $ to build entry-level residential and there's not enough of it. There can be a role for private.

@WestEndCassidy What I love about old buildings is exactly this! Small touches of art and symbols.

My favourite bit of the Kromar building are the two bulldogs on either side of the door. They were to symbolize Security Storage, the original owner of the building, and cost $100 each in 1929! flickr.com/photos/christi…
