@ICT_MrP I’d like to know why, when Ofsted themselves say that ‘Mocksteds’ are totally unnecessary, so many inspectors do consultancy work and therefore exactly that. They must earn a fortune for something their own outfit says they absolutely should not be doing. What’s that about?!

I’ve always wondered why anyone would become an Ofsted inspector, I’ve always thought for a lot of people it’s to get some sort of advantage for their school, turns out that’s true!

Need your help, BookTwitter. I'm running a National Year of Reading event for to 14-18 yr olds. Name one book that at around that age lit up your imagination. Audiobooks, graphic novels, short stories - all welcome. Stories that will set them on fire and make them want to read. I'm looking for books to rave about for the simple joy of reading, so not really the classics that they might be asked to read as past of the syllabus. Go...

Expected standard was from the outset - I was there - based on guesswork and wishful thinking. It has never had any basis in reality. Education's answer to Stalin's five year plans.
Ruth Swailes@SwailesRuth

I’m getting pretty tired of people who haven’t set foot in a classroom to teach in decades and people who’ve never actually led schools in challenging circumstances suggesting that “expected standard” = complacency or mediocrity. If it’s such a doddle, why not step up and do it?!

@JohnBaldLangLit How does our expected standard in year six relate to other jurisdictions - states, NZ, Australia, etc.

@helenrey @Joblerone1 @sciantificnew @TTRadioOfficial Personally I think it is hypocritical if you are asking a student to remove a nose stud or big earrings etc if you are stood there with facial piercings. As an adult there needs to be a clearly defined line between what is professionally acceptable and what is not.

Tomorrow on @TTRadioOfficial: Should teachers be seen using mobile phones if students aren't allowed them? Should teachers have a strict dress code if uniform rules are strict for students? Are we setting the right example? All this and more! Tomorrow, 6pm. Get involved!

@Joblerone1 @helenrey @sciantificnew @TTRadioOfficial It does not "infantalise" teachers. Of course if verification is needed then that is essential use. But teachers' phones should always be set to silent when in the classroom and teachers should never be seen scrolling through emails or social media as, I'm afraid, some do.

@helenrey @TheDoctorMagic @sciantificnew @TTRadioOfficial CPOMHs did not exist in 1989. The phone app that links my phone to my laptop is exactly WHY I have to use my phone to get into my laptop! I wouldn’t be using it otherwise. But the reason they can’t use a phone is because they are 11. That’s it. No further explanation required.

@Joblerone1 @helenrey @sciantificnew @TTRadioOfficial Of course there are some things teachers are allowed to do which students are not but not doing things unnecessarily in front of them. If students were able to be married, they would be allowed to wear a wedding ring! But teachers, too, should only wear "essential" jewellery.

@helenrey @Joblerone1 @sciantificnew @TTRadioOfficial Teachers should always set a good example. Telling students they do not need to use a phone but then using one themselves is very poor. Although teachers don't have to wear school uniform, they should still have a dress code which should be enforced fairly.

@helenrey @sciantificnew @TTRadioOfficial The point is that there are various things that teachers are ‘allowed’ to do, because they are adults. Driving is one example, wearing a wedding ring where students are not permitted jewellery is another.

@specsavers Why do you make your apprentices work on Sundays and never allow them to have two consecutive days off? Bit much for £7.75 an hour.

My grandson came home yesterday and told his mum that they had a lesson on muslims, and their religion in school that day. Today, my family decided that as Christians, catholics, and with Jewish relatives as well as women's rights activists aplenty within our family, this was not appropriate, needed, or wanted. Monday, the head teacher will have a complaint she never imagined, she will never forget and will never wish repeated.
