These aerial photographs are an excellent example of strip grazing on cover crops.
Strip grazing is when livestock are given access to one small section of a field at a time, letting them graze evenly while the rest of the cover crop rests and recovers.
While it requires a bit of preparation and labor, strip grazing brings a multitude of benefits to the soil, such as...
🌾 High impact and longer rest periods - Livestock create a beneficial disturbance followed by extended rest, allowing soils and plants time to recover and strengthen.
🌾 Improved nutrient cycling - Manure and urine are distributed more evenly across the field, returning nutrients directly to the soil where they’re most needed.
🌾 Soil Armor - The higher herd density encourages more trampling, pressing crop residue into the surface to form a protective layer over the soil.
Thanks to Juan Urbisaglia for these amazing photos!

Thanks to a great group of ag policy makers representing many national wildlife interests we had a fun afternoon of #soilhealth school on the Breker farm. Putting the shovel in the ground never gets old.#cdplodge #pairrow60”corn.

Down in the flats harvesting a beautiful #pairrow60” corn crop while a wedding is going on at #cdplodge on the hill. The covers are as good as I’ve seen them, working on getting some four legged creatures out here.

I got a few new props! Anyone know an engineer that knows how #tillage implements move soil based on shape, depth, speed, ...?

@SoilLorax Planting to shallow or lack of soil structure are a couple possibilities.

Help! Field w/partial lodging issues over many years. #Corn that lodged didn't have brace roots. Why would some corn not grow brace roots? No pests or stalk issues. #Diskripped, cont corn, less issues in wheel tracks. Well fertilized. Tried multiple hybrids. #mncorn

We did it! The Soil Management Summit won a nat'l sustainability award in ag! Big thanks to the team!
We are busy planning the 21st SMS for Jan 14-15 in Fargo, ND. I'm so excited, NDSU Extension is co-organizing it with us! More info at z.umn.edu/SMS-DIRT

@60inCornFarmer The early corn is looking pretty good up here in ND. The later hasn’t kicked into high yet.

@agrivation1 If I was in a corn bean rotation that would be a good plan but I usually have a four year with cereals and specialty crops.
English

@JoeBreker Looking good! So 30” beans in there? Then 60” corn next year where the rye/alfalfa is now?
English

Burning down my rye/alfalfa cover crop planted a year ago in my #pairrow60” corn, it might be alittle early but a few weeds are getting pretty far along.

English

@PoppePaul The corn that got in earlier last year was good but the plantings right before our big vacation last year struggled.
English

@JoeBreker How did the corn yield last year compared to other years?
