Going through change? Make it a transition! Subtle, but important difference. Change happens to us. Transition is when we adapt to, and accept the change. A great conversation with our 5Star Life Insurance team in Lincoln Nebraska, a company I am honored to be part of. 5StarLife offers affordable insurance, geared toward the needs of our US Soldiers, National Guard and first responders. Our motto is, "We serve those who serve our nation."

Ending this Memorial Day with a walk through Rockaway’s 9/11 Tribute Park. To me, these flowers represent the thriving spirit of this great nation, blooming in memory of those who died for us.

My last visit to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Arlington National Cemetery: Close to 1 million Americans have died serving our country in war, and it is estimated that more than 70,000 were missing in action or never identified. They are remembered here. Twenty-one seconds, 21 steps — the highest military honor. “The Changing of the Guard.” The tomb itself represents something even larger: that every person who serves matters. Inscribed on the tomb are the words: “Here rests in honored glory an American soldier known but to God.”

A great day with Charlotte and Juliette. I have stood with Charlotte within the overhanging branches of this tree in front of the house since she was an infant, and I will do the same with Juliette. For me, it is kind of a spiritual prayer, message, that we are all connected. Life is not about one of us; it’s about each of us. When they’re old enough, I will reinforce this concept with them. And they will know that a life of connectivity is a happy life. “Every piece of the universe, even the tiniest little snow crystal, matters somehow. I have a place in the pattern, and so do you."

Close to one million American soldiers have given their lives throughout our nation’s history. Pedro Antonio Millet Meletiche IV is one of them. Pedro grew up in Guayanilla, a small town in Puerto Rico. When he was 10 years old, he moved with his family to Elizabeth, New Jersey. I think the best way to describe this young hero is through a direct quote from his mother, Denise: “My son was a very smart, humble, and extremely protective gentleman. He was the heart of our family. Not a moment passed without him uplifting our spirits. He loved his family and friends tremendously, and always selflessly. He loved carpentry, and he was a true artist at it. He built the most beautiful woodwork you can imagine. He was a great athlete and played All-Star League baseball in high school. His favorite player was Roberto Clemente, whom he looked up to as a role model for bravery, selflessness, and love of humanity. He believed in the USA. He was a true patriot. He joined the military because he believed so deeply in our country.” Pedro was an Army Specialist assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team. He died during a combat operation in Afghanistan when his unit was struck by an IED on August 22, 2010. Pedro was only 20 years old. We remember Pedro, all of our fallen heroes, and their families always, but especially on this sacred weekend. For Denise and her family, this weekend will never be about barbecues.

Never about barbecues Memorial Day parade, Bay Ridge, 2005, when I was Chief of Brooklyn South. Whether after lining up to support a fellow officer during a family funeral or before a parade, I always thought it was important to have huddles like this one. I would thank the cops, explain why they were there, and remind them how important their presence was. In this huddle, I spoke about Memorial Day and likely said, “For the families of those who died serving our country, this weekend will never be about barbecues.” I wish everyone a reflective and purposeful Memorial Day weekend.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day, and even on a rainy day, there are moments of beauty. Good night from Rockaway Bay.

Water always wins over the rock. Becoming the best version of ourselves is not a one-and-done process; it is a constant work in progress. Wishing each of us a better version of ourselves today than yesterday, and an even better version tomorrow.

The Duke and the Duchess Great spending part of the NYPD Memorial Run with Assistant Chief Christine Bastedenbeck and Deputy Chief Ray Porteus. I first worked with Christine when she was a sergeant in the 63 Precinct, and with Ray when he was a lieutenant in the 71 Precinct. I was lucky enough to work with them throughout their careers, and I was so happy when each joined me at the Transit Bureau. Both became integral parts of my team when I was Chief of Transit. They handled challenges before I even knew they existed. They took every raw idea I had and turned it into something even better and actionable. Most importantly, they cared deeply about the mission, but they cared just as much about the people carrying out that mission. A note to leaders: The more you share with your team, the stronger your team becomes. And the stronger your team, the more effective a leader you become. Thank you, Ray and Christine. I will always cherish what we accomplished together. And as I watch both of your careers continue to grow, I know there is even more to come.

A couple of more moments with the Duke and the Duchess. Sometimes as Chief of Transit, I had to be laser-focused! 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣
