I was only able to write my book because of notorial and judicial records which exposed British involvement in Brazilian slavery when sources in the UK were punctuated with silences.

@jcaetanoleite Yes, I'm reading Aidoo's excellent book on slavery, she collates all kinds of records. but it's striking that there is so little, and that it is mostly foreign.

In 1890, Brazilian finance minister Rui Barbosa issued a proclamation ordering the destruction of all government records relating to slavery. It then took several years to destroy all these records. Thus, although 4.8-5.5 million enslaved Africans were forcibly taken to Brazil, there’s possibly less preserved evidence on the reality of Brazilian slavery than in North America. In fact, some of the most detailed accounts come from European visitors who did not disguise the horrors of slavery. Brazil’s destruction of its record is perhaps an apt illustration of racial inequality, in so far as a powerful elite could just destroy the evidence, rather than permit truth-seeking.

@Gabeyoncee Unfortunately it is not the easiest book to get a hold of. I managed to consult a copy through an interlibrary loan from a university library here in the UK

@Gabeyoncee I have not seen the original, but a version of Joseph Moore's diary was published as J.W. Moore, The Revolution of 1831 with notes by J.M Harvey (São Paulo: Sociedade Brasileira de Cultura Inglesa, 1962).

This is an excellent map of the area in the 1850s, illustrating the site of a few of Byker's shipyards. I've taken liberty to annotate where they would be today, as well as the area once the shipyards were lifted by the 1890s.

My big interest in Newcastle's history is Byker. Shipbuilding is probably a lesser known feature of its heritage. There was a couple yards at St Peter's, namely Smith's and Cunningham's. Blenheim was probably the biggest produced here, for the East India route seen below.
