Addiction treatment must be a project of solidarity, not social control.

and the role of this forum in discourse, even in the worlds I care about, has not yet been replaced by others like Bluesky. Hopefully I can return to it with a voice, and an ear for others I want to listen for, but not the addictive frustrated relationship I had with it before/2

@MaxJordan_N given that you’ve just described the schedule of a typical academic general medicine researcher, odds are that is eventually exactly what you’re going to end up doing even without marrying rich

Would you still do your work if you married rich, Like hella rich? I’d finish residency, do 1 day of clinic, RANDOM causal inference research & public writing. I’d enjoy the work more bc it wouldn’t also be about having a job to pay bills. Medicine just bc I like it. A dream lol

@NanouTheNomad Emphasizing the importance of simplification of dosing is at least as important to addiction medicine as reducing polypharmacy is to geriatrics

...if you're interested, a much longer essay about what it was like to be her son while she was in the hospital is here, something I just had to write down to get it out of my head. Still a lot to process. joewrightmd.com/mureceptormixt…

For that small number of people who know me and know my mom, I'm sorry to say that she died in a hospital last month. If you're someone who wants to attend her memorial on 11/11/2023, please contact me directly. Obit here, and... legacy.com/us/obituaries/…

@melnickjeffrey1 And you may find yourself in a union bargaining session And you may find yourself reassuring your investors And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful ticket price And you may ask yourself, "Well, how did I get here?"

Ok. Using this app as a space to launch the Ron Desantis campaign is too much. If I tweet and no one reads it, I should actually be writing elsewhere; if I tweet and people do read it, I’m feeding engagement and helping raise ad rates for a right wing billionaire. Nope. Bye.

They are therefore not actually hospitality; they are simply unreliable cessation of hostility.

In Boston especially I see forms of selective mercy—ways that police or property owners do or don’t enforce things depending on the temperature and how well-kept or temporary a sleeping spot seems to be. But these are not reliable and never announced in advance.

When I was a kid in the 70s there used to be this distinction between “hobo” and “bum”; after the 80s everyone was “homeless”. This guy describes a “hobo” kind of life (including his looking down on others who aren’t traveling, as “bums”) and reminds me of that distinction.
𝙷𝚒𝚌𝚔𝚖𝚊𝚗@shagbark_hick

For about 7 years, I lived with no fixed address. For 5 of those years, I was constantly traveling. Where the hell did I sleep? About 7 nights in 10, I 'stealth camped' anywhere I could sleep without detection. In almost 2k nights out, I was caught <10 times. Megathread 1/25+

The most important reasons to oppose abortion bans are _not medical_ and I do think it is important for _doctors_ to continue to emphasize that.

@melnickjeffrey1 to me the distinction is not industry genres it’s ideology, like literally the Moody Blues synths stand for a different politics of gender and sexuality than Yaz synths, and as a teenager in the 80s with unrequited crushes on straight boys and lesbian girls… well. Yaz
