Oh neat, for more complex setups, chezmoi is a templating engine that handles this. It takes a compiled approach, which is a bit different from my choice of live, git-updated symlinked .dotfiles: chezmoi.io

Finally built a truly unified, cross-platform dotfiles architecture bridging my macOS and ChromeOS machines. Instead of juggling separate Git branches for different OSes, everything is driven by OS-aware blocks in a single, version-controlled repository. 1/4

To keep environments perfectly synced without constantly changing directories, I wrote custom zsh functions. I can now safely pull (dotpull), commit (dotpush), and view a colorized Git log (dotlog) of the config repository from anywhere on the system. 4/4

The biggest win: extracting my custom shell scripts into a standalone bin directory and making them OS-agnostic. They automatically discover the correct Google Drive mount path depending on the host, swapping between macOS open and Linux xdg-open equivalents. 3/4
