Okay I finished Metroid Prime 4, heres my review!!
For most of the game it’s the best Prime game next to Prime 1 and even eclipses Prime 1 in spots but then the third act hits and it’s so terrible that it’s put me off ever replaying it (unless they patch it to make it more tolerable) so it’s definitely the worst Prime game and I understand now why critics scored it so low. It’s a game of massive highs and massive lows.
PROS
- Music is the 2nd best in the whole series next to Prime 1
- Best art direction in a Nintendo game ever
- Psychic abilities are great and the puzzles are the best in the series
- The NPCs are actually great for the most part, there are a couple of parts where there is some cringe dialog but I enjoyed them, Takabi and Duke being the highlights for me, Armstrong starts off way more annoying than Myles but was endearing by the end, way better characters than the characters in Prime 3.
- Bosses are great, one boss in particular is one of the best bosses in the entire series, the final boss and ending is the best in the Prime series, they never hit the highs of Prime 2 though (Quadraxis is still the GOAT)
- Viola is great for the most part and it was necessary in this game to prevent it from being too samey, the certification sequence is tonal whiplash though
- The backstory for the Lamorn is so so good,
CONS
- The game doesnt really hit its groove until Volt Forge and peaks at Ice Belt and then never hits that high again.
- The combat in the Prime games is showing its age now and needs a complete makeover. There are straight shooter segments a couple of times in this game and it becomes apparent. It does have the best combat in the series though
-Sol Valley (the desert) is the BIG weakspot, its relatively empty with not much too do and becomes boring, the lack of a soundtrack makes it worse though (im not buying an amiibo just to have music in the game.)
- The story for this game is all over the place and a lot of questions go unanswered (it makes me think, Prime 5 will be a thing.)
- No Screw Attack in the game, seriously wtf!
- The fetch quest at the end, by far the WORST PART OF THE GAME, if you thought Prime 2's was bad this is 10x worse and there isnt 1 but 2 of them!!! It is so bad, that it was at this moment that it dropped from my 2nd favourite Prime to being the worst Prime, cause I was so bored and turned off by it, that I have no desire to replay the game because of this segment.
Overrall I think this game is Metroids Skyward Sword moment. I hope to review the game with some of the OG Prime devs in the new year to get their thoughts.
