@mattyglesias Doesn’t “luck” denote chance? His poi t is that these things are not determined by chance, ergo it’s a mistake to call them luck. Seems pretty straightforward.

This is a very strange conception of what “luck” is.

the great thing about AI is that everyone seems to think "well it gets things wrong in my area of expertise but its so good for everything else"

@Atticus_of_Oz @thereisnobeth i feel like it's pretty easy to determine on subjects of general interest whether someone is lying to you constantly. how do you know if the people you talk to irl aren't just constantly making shit up? this is just part of being alive, it doesn't seem that difficult to me

@RhythmDoc01 @raiv11 @trevomad @mattyglesias listen i havent seen the movie but my best guess is it's gonna feel something like "this is a story in which a guy sees a very eclectic range of shit, let's populate it with a very wide range of people to match that". it's not hard to imagine an artistic reason to do it this way

@johanlenox @raiv11 @trevomad @mattyglesias If, for example, someone were to cast Peter Dinklage as Polyphemus (without doing the sort of CGI thing they did with him in Avengers, which was fun), I would assume they were doing so with deliberate intent. Wouldn’t you?

@Atticus_of_Oz @thereisnobeth i mean you can define "often" how you want i guess but in my experience it's not often enough to be a problem for most situations

@25th_jake @thereisnobeth i guess thats an interesting philosophical quandry but in practice i use ChatGPT like a guy i met at a bar who knows weirdly a lot about World War II, just for every topic ever. like i'm still assuming it's only gonna be 90% correct and if it's important i'll verify it

@RhythmDoc01 @raiv11 @trevomad @mattyglesias youre being obtuse man there are a million possible ways to render that which would be "authentic" to the description, same as numerous other elements of the text. it's fantasy which everyone interprets differently

@RhythmDoc01 @raiv11 @trevomad @mattyglesias idk tbh it seems like we all at least agree that one can draw a line between authenticity and experimentation and just disagree abt where the line should be drawn. to me since there's no such thing as cyclopses or sirens we've already crossed into total fantasy so who cares

@raiv11 @johanlenox @trevomad @mattyglesias If it were as immediately obvious to me that the armor was wrong as it was to those guys, yes, that too would be immersion-breakingly silly. It’s on the order of Achilles dragging Hector around the walls of Troy behind a Jeep.

@RhythmDoc01 @raiv11 @trevomad @mattyglesias it probably won't but it will have some level of that i assume. idk like you ever watch game of thrones? people love that shit and it's just a completely hodgepodge of ideas borrowed from all over the place

@raiv11 @johanlenox @trevomad @mattyglesias And if the movie he produces *does* have that level of magical-weirdness- anachronism, then I will retract my complaint completely, he can cast whoever he wants.

@michaeloburns yeah, she was terrible. her only selling point is that she is not bass or pratt. that's about it. there's no sugarcoating the fact most of what she said were platitudes. la politic machine wins again.

@raiv11 @RhythmDoc01 @trevomad @mattyglesias the notion that there's any way to do this with historical authenticity seems insane to me, we have no idea what any of this shit was and half of it has never even existed in any form in real life

@RhythmDoc01 @raiv11 @trevomad @mattyglesias like to reinvent old mythology is precisely because it's so pliable. if i wanna make a play where everyone is an alien on mars or some shit while still following a well-known story, ancient mythology is the first place i would go for material that's very flexible in that way

@RhythmDoc01 @raiv11 @trevomad @mattyglesias i obviously haven't seen the movie but it does not appear to me to have the trappings of historical authenticity. anyway and the story itself is fictional and involves mythical beings so even less reason to care abt that. like i do creative work and a lot of the reason people..
