Andy Burnham is now Prime Minister, and I wish him every success in leading our country. My job in the House of Commons – and that of the Conservative Party – will be to hold him to account. We are going to hear a lot of announcements from the new Prime Minister in the coming days, and it is wrong that he is not coming to Parliament until September to answer questions about them. We cannot continue to borrow more and more money. People are already paying too much tax, and any announcements the Labour Party make must be properly funded. We need to get Britain working again, and the Conservatives will work with Andy Burnham in Parliament to cut the benefits bill. He has our support if he is willing to do it. Labour have made so many mistakes in government over the last two years. I hope they don’t continue.

🥀 As Labour announce Burnham as leader, Lucy Powell says, “It’s like the last day of term.” That’s exactly the problem. Andy Burnham is refusing to answer questions about his plans for our country. He should have been in Parliament next week, but Labour blocked it.

🚨 BREAKING - CAMPAIGN VICTORY 🚨 The Labour Government has U-turned on its plans to strip Coastguard Rescue Officers of their pay! Plans to remove these small hourly payments were always wrong, and I have been proud to support the campaign, led brilliantly by Kelly Stockdale from Eyemouth.

🐖 Family-run pig farms are under huge pressure across Scotland. @NFUStweets estimates that Scottish members of the United Pig Co-operative lost £2.7 million in the first four months of this year. That’s clearly not sustainable. The consequences could have a significant impact on businesses across the Borders. It’s not just farmers who will be affected, but also haulage firms, feed merchants, vets, processors and many other rural businesses. I spoke up in Parliament again, calling for a fair deal for our pig farmers. 👇

It’s so important that everyone has access to good-quality, healthy food. I met with Sainsbury’s to learn more about their work to encourage people to increase their fibre intake and make it easier to cook healthy meals at home with simple recipes.

BREAKING A Conservative attempt to force a vote on extending Parliament’s sitting to Monday so that the Commons can scrutinise Andy Burnham’s government has been cancelled. The planned Opposition Day debate tomorrow would have seen the Tories forcing a vote on the Commons sitting for an extra day. But it has been replaced with a different debate by Labour whips. Tories point out Boris Johnson faced MPs for one day before the summer recess when he was made PM in 2019. Instead MPs will break for a six week summer holiday on Thursday. More at @GBNEWS.

✨ Great to catch up with Giles Ingram and the fantastic team at Abbotsford. Congratulations to them on being shortlisted for the South of Scotland Thistle Awards! I am delighted to see them recognised as one of just three finalists in the Best Visitor Attraction category. It’s a well-deserved achievement that reflects all their hard work. Wishing the team the very best of luck! 👏🏆

🐖 Our pig farmers across the Borders and the United Kingdom do an outstanding job in very difficult circumstances. The National Pig Association has told me that independent pig farmers are currently losing as much as £50 per pig. This is clearly unsustainable and puts the sector at risk. I’ll keep backing our brilliant Borders farmers, who make a huge contribution to our local economy.

Great to catch up with the management committee at the Newtown St Boswells Community Wing. They provide a fantastic service for our local community, but it isn’t easy to keep it running, and the costs are significant. I’ll always fight to protect the local community services that people value and rely on.
