🇳🇿 The U16 Social Media Ban 🚨 A Government Ruse Why hasn't the New Zealand Govt told you they have the capability to perform age identity checks using birth certificate data without sneaking in new legislation? This is embedded in legislation dating back to 2012 & operational systems run by the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA). (This is the same period they introduced Palantir spyware & amended police spying legislation.) 🔗 ID Info Confirmation Act 2012 legislation.govt.nz/act/public/201… The DIA already runs a fully functional electronic service that allows government departments to quickly confirm the accuracy & validity of identity information -births, passports, & citizenship databases. 🔗 ID Info Confirmation Bill 2010 (187-2) legislation.govt.nz/bill/governmen… Consider the National Health Index (NHI) number. Every child is assigned one at birth, based on their birth registration with the DIA. This number follows us through life: it is used by Health NZ to link all your records Our Education system also links children with a National Student Number (NSN) for daily attendance & achievement tracking. The NHI acts as a "super-linker" within Statistics NZ's Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI)- the database that joins health & education data. So the foundational identifier already exists. 🤔 So what would actually happen if the U16 social media ban came into force? The bill currently sitting in Parliament focuses on forcing social media companies to verify ages. But that is the frontend. The real story is the backend. To verify all Kiwi's the DIA is already building the identity-checking machinery needed to enforce a ban-despite the bill being on hold. The reality means every adult would have to prove their age to use basic social media, forcing everyone into an Orwellian digital ID system. The Privacy Commissioner has already warned this could lead to "large scale data collection" of personal information, & potentially biometric data, for all adult users, but it appears it already does 🔗RNZ rnz.co.nz/news/political… If the DIA ramps up the system to instantly verify every Kiwi's age for social media, that system becomes an even more openly recognised powerful surveillance tool. The DIA unit is already tasked with these programmes: · Enforces internet blocklists & takedown notices. · Investigates citizens for objectionable content. · Holds the biometric data & facial images of every passport holder. · Operates RealMe &the Digital Identity Services Trust Framework, used across nearly 200 government & commercial services. Using facial recognition to compare selfies against passport photos stored in the database. Through the GCSB, the govt already has mass data collection on Kiwis. This is linked to Palantir- the company that's building mass surveillance for governments linked to approximately 77% of all countries. Our Defence Force, SIS, & GCSB since 2013 already use Palantir's software to analyse combined data from different agencies. The IDI research database? It is a solution in search of a different problem. If this Act becomes mandatory, the connection between your NHI number, birth data, & other identifiers becomes permanent & accessible. Currently, police & GCSB cannot access that data without a warrant-but the creation of a centralised identity infrastructure will change their game. The Act will assist, with your compliance, building the machinery that would make mass data collection or surveillance very easy for any government to broaden warrantless access. That is the real danger: not what the law says today, but what the infrastructure enables tomorrow - especially when that infrastructure already has Palantir at its core.
