“An institution that has lost sight of any type of ultimate telos will inevitably become consumed by one immediate end—self-preservation.” (Elisabeth Kincaid) Encouraged by this new resource on educating for citizenship from @JohnInazu & friends. open.substack.com/pub/johninazu/…

What might a genuine academic mission of a university look like today? Some reflections guided by Alasdair MacIntyre, and a public dialogue this Thursday to further the conversation. johninazu.substack.com/p/educating-fo…

First copies of my book are here!! As a new faculty member, I realized that in addition to my research job, I also had a leadership job…and I wasn’t prepared for that. This book is the guide I wish I’d had then, with the goal of helping others now.   jenheemstra.com/book

Two years ago, I moved to Tulsa to become the inaugural dean of a new honors college.  Then President @bradrcarson convinced me to leave my endowed position at Carolina to build the university’s sixth college. I am so proud of all we accomplished over the last two years 🧵(1/21)

This week, tornadoes, celebrations, and Alasdair MacIntyre reminded me that rather than simply shaking our fists at the institutions we don’t control, we have an opportunity to shape some of the ones around us even as they continue to shape us. johninazu.substack.com/p/tornadoes-ce…

Smart smart piece @JohnInazu . Love that you quoted: “As scholars and educational officers, they should remember that the public may judge their profession and their institution by their utterances. Hence they … should show respect for the opinions of others …”

Colleges and universities have shown little introspection as to how those of us in higher education might be part of the problem. Perhaps we are contributorily negligent to creating the political culture that makes these vicious attacks possible. johninazu.substack.com/p/higher-educa…

“These shortcomings are fundamentally problems of culture, and you can’t change culture overnight. But if I were an academic leader, I would take some initial steps to build a sense of shared purpose and norms for public communication.” open.substack.com/pub/johninazu/… Three suggestions from @JohnInazu:

Here is the text of the talk I gave last week at Duke. I focused on some lessons I learned at Duke and some of the ways that I hope Duke can maintain its pluralistic and educational aspirations in the midst of mounting challenges to higher education. johninazu.substack.com/p/pluralism-pa…

Author @JohnInazu joined the #ReadingReligion Salon to discuss his book “Learning to Disagree.” He emphasized the importance of understanding your own convictions, saying that once you fully understand what you believe, you are freed to engage across differences and to set the terms of what common ground might be possible. The goal of the book, he said, is learning to disagree; not about reaching consensus. We must also remember that learning is an ongoing activity, and we must accept that learning is a process and we will do it imperfectly - so don't be discouraged. 📚Join more of our upcoming Open Reading Religion Salon sessions: boniuk.rice.edu/reading-religi…
