"Now he's passed the torch to Kamala Harris. We must unite behind her to defeat Trump" How about asking the question whether in a place claiming to be a high-functioning democracy the choice of candidate might be by mechanism other that "torch passing"?
Robert Reich@RBReich

Having led us out of the worst public health and economic crises in most of our lives, President Biden should be remembered as one of our great leaders. Now he's passed the torch to Kamala Harris. We must unite behind her to defeat Trump. Our freedom and democracy depend on it.

Obviously not happening, but the Tories are now proposing 30 hours of free childcare *a week* from 9 months in new manifesto. That’s a massive commitment - and shows how quickly the dial has turned on childcare being a massive issue for people of all incomes.

Just really bizarre/bad politics to repeatedly criticise your predecessor, even if they were disliked. Never understand why it's done, and it applies to all parties and factions. Does it really "distance" you? news.sky.com/story/jeremy-c…

@mr_james_c @s8mb You're going to find many, many more people who can talk to the terrible experiences with landlords refusing to fix anything, effectively stealing deposits etc.

@s8mb Having had terrible experiences with tenants, landlords frequently spend more than the bond making good damage by tenants. The bond is held independently so often the landlord has to make repairs long before the bond is released.

One way to protect tenants (instead of abolishing fixed term leases) would be to require landlords to put up a deposit as well as the tenant. The landlord's deposit would be used for repairs if the tenant could show the DPS that the landlord was unresponsive / uncooperative.

Parents are glad to have had acknowledgement that after 14 yrs the childcare system is broken but ultimately this market needs reform. Mothers pay a part-time penalty in work and pay through the nose for the privilege. The workforce needed just isn't there. #ToryChaos

I’m told that, thanks to football matches and the Free Palestine march, there will be London boroughs with barely a dozen police officers on duty tomorrow. Crazy situation - football clubs and protest organisers should have to pay for their own policing to be allowed to go ahead.

@thomasforth Omg I'm so grateful for this. Been saying it forever. Just use the analogy "who doesn't borrow to buy their house? And if I borrowed to cover energy bills, that's bad. If I borrow to put in double glazing to lower said bills, that's good" etc etc

Fascinating paper this. Turns out the way to get the public to stop being so negative about the government running a deficit and be more comfortable with borrowing to invest is,... to use the analogy of the household budget.

Two questions I often get asked: 1) is the UK's recent economic performance really that different to other advanced economies? 2) even if it is, does it matter to normal people? The answer is yes on both fronts resolutionfoundation.org/comment/resili…

On the left: Portsmouth’s old General Post Office building. It was demolished after 1977. I’d like to say it was replaced by an eyesore but today there’s…simply nothing there. What absolute idiocy.

@paulmasonnews @labourlewis Starmer and the control freaks don't want anyone on the Left, if that means people who want e.g. higher taxes on rhe wealthy. I like his national renewal speech but how do we fund it meaningfully? Very happy to compromise but if I'm just kicked in the nuts repeatedly?

7/ I want to see a left that is part of the Starmer project - that can fight the corner of trade unions, social justice campaigns, and climate radicalism - and mobilise against the resistance we will face in government ... not just from corrupt Tory business interests but from the far right...
