I applied for Fall 2007 semester and didn't get in. The Fall semester starts in August. I got rejected by all the schools I applied to. I planned on waiting a year, to apply again for Fall 2008. Then, one day in September 2007, I was watching a movie and NEPA just took light like that. No warning, no rhyme nor reason, no pattern to the black outs. I was so mad. Can't someone enjoy a 90-minute movie in peace? We turned on the generator but instead of continuing my movie, I just opened my laptop and started rage applying to more schools for the Spring 2008 semester. Spring semester starts in January. One month after that rude interruption, I got four fully funded PhD/Masters offers. Three months later, I was on the plane out of the country to start a new life in America.

Those who have migrated abroad, what was the final straw that made you decide it was time to leave your home country?

If you’re not getting promoted every 18-24 months, your company doesn’t rate you. I say this as someone who spent over a decade working for a company that promotes (if they do) once every 4 years. The people they want as the CEO or in the executive team are getting promoted on average every two years. Those are the folks the company truly rate. Everyone else is fodder. If you’re not ok with this, you can change it. But like everything else, it will come at a cost. You can job hop. This is the easiest way to do it. Move on if they don’t celebrate you where you’re at. And always ensure you’re taking the next higher step in the new company you’re porting to. Companies love to shortchange their employees. They bring in a new hire at a higher pay or level who essentially doesn’t know more than the “loyalists.” Be that new hire. Don’t be the loyalist. You can signify your willingness to relocate. Many careers often go nowhere because people don’t want to go anywhere. You may love Houston but your promotion within the same company may be in Kalamazoo. If you are willing to go to the latter, you can climb the next rung on the ladder. Don’t accept any excuses they give you for why you’re not getting promoted: “that’s the structure”, “ you’re still learning the job”, “there are others before you on the line” and so on. The moment you concede, you will keep conceding. Look, people take jobs or remain at jobs for a variety of reasons. The message here is not to leave because of stagnation. The message is to have a clear-eyed assessment of where you stand in your relationship with your company. Don’t let them gaslight you. These days, a patient dog eats no bone at all.

It is already 2026 somewhere on Earth. And no, those people are not ahead of you. They are just in a different time zone. Some people don't even use the same calendar. Ask the Ethiopians. And that is exactly how life works. Some people will graduate at 22. Some at 42. Someone found love at 18. Another at 48. Someone built wealth by 30. Another is just starting at 45. Social media makes you think you are late. You are not. You are just watching everyone else's highlight reel while living your behind the scenes. There are no latecomers in success. Only people in different lanes, moving at different speeds, toward different destinations. As you step into the new year, remember this: Your only competition is who you were yesterday not where someone else is today. Not the person you graduated with. Not the entrepreneur who "made it" at 23. Direction beats speed. Always. And please, don't postpone happiness. Life is not a waiting room where joy begins after achievement. Find reasons to smile NOW, in the messy middle, in the uncertainty, in the becoming. 2026 will not care when you arrive. It will only care that you are moving. I am rooting for you ❤️ Keep going. You will arrive in your own time. And it will be worth every step. Follow for motivation, education, and perspective. Let's win together in 2026.

Back in 100 Level, I was the guy. Girls flocked around me, always trying to tap from my brain. They would come to my house to “learn,” beg me to organize tutorials, and act like I was their academic life support. I actually enjoyed teaching. Fast-forward to 300 Level second semester: The same girls who used to sit attentively with notebooks now barely look my way unless it’s transactional. They stopped wanting knowledge. They just wanted grades. Many had started dating Yahoo boys, and suddenly money became the shortcut. I offered to properly teach one of them a course that was hard for them. She said “No, just let me pay you. I’ll come and sit beside you in the exam hall". That line alone should tell you everything. If only people could see the real damage Yahoo Yahoo is doing, not just to society, but to an entire generation of young men and women who traded self-respect, ambition, and actual intelligence for quick cash and fake lifestyle. They didn’t just stop learning. They stopped believing they could. And that’s the part that hurts the most. We’re not just losing students. We’re losing futures. 😩
