While most talk revolves around the midfield rebuild, the CB situation is a structural crisis waiting to happen. Lisandro Martinez’s injury jeopardizes his availability for the season opener. Yet, even if we assume a fully fit Martinez, the systemic issues in the backline are seemingly being completely overlooked. With De Ligt guaranteed to miss the first 1-2 months following back surgery, the CB’s available are reduced to Martinez, Yoro, Heaven and Maguire. This presents an untenable risk profile for a team claiming to have title aspirations. Yoro and Heaven are promising but relying on them to sort the defence out for an entire season across a relentless schedule is naive. The primary tactical issue however, is Maguire. Starting him systematically breaks the team. His lack of recovery pace dictates a deep defensive block. When the attack initiates a press, Maguire's deep positioning creates massive gaps, completely isolating the central midfield and neutralizing any form of cohesive pressing structure. It’s a risk that we simply can’t afford. I’m genuinely concerned about the upcoming season and regardless if we play Santos, Kobbie, Tielemans or Mount in the centre of the park, they’ll be set up to fail if we can’t sort the backline out.
