I say this w/ no joy at all but it seems to me that Dutch intellectual life is just as vapid & hollow as American intellectual life. America & the Netherlands are both “muh freedom” nations.
Besides that fact that writers and scholars are not the same category of intellectuals, it is probably necessary to explain why I specifically chose writers as a manifestation of overall intellectualism. Because unlike scholars or scientists, who are practical and results oriented (even philosophy falls under this category), writers (and therefore their readers) are the ultimate expression of the most luxurious, non-practical intellect - intellectual activity purely for the sake of it. Hence the more writers (and readers) you have, the more likely you are to produce a world famous one. It’s not a goal in itself, it’s just a signal - an indication of the overall quality of intellectual life in society.
Ik woon nu een maand samen met een sekspop. Eerst voelde ik me leeg na elke keer dat we het deden, maar na meer tijd met haar gespendeerd te hebben voel ik me juist geheeld.
Morgen weer dat eindeloze gezever van officials. Mijn gedachten zijn maar bij twee mensen.
