@Bankless_Africa We are concerned about users' privacy - but that includes being honest. The contents are not end-to-end encrypted. Whoever runs the server you're using can access the contents. If you want to guarantee privacy, you have to run your own diaspora* pod.

4. @joindiaspora is focused on privacy so much that it goes above and beyond when it comes to protecting its users’ privacy. Diaspora uses end-to-end encryption to ensure that content shared on the platform is between the users that are engaging in the conversation

Top Decentralized social media platforms to be a part of If you failed to be early in most of the crypto trends so far, you don’t want to miss the next big thing in the decentralized world as an African. (Yes! we’ve got some alpha) A thread🧵

We always urge our users to twink twice before publicly sharing something. While we do our best at giving you control, once something is public, there is no turning back. Here is the thread we originally quoted, and which Twitter has since removed. web.archive.org/web/2022121900…

Seriously, diaspora* is rubbish and we don’t recommend anyone to give it a try.

@rizapasha_ Despite our username, we're team behind the project, not any specific pod. Also, there's a gigantic notice on how you can get help with your account on the front page.

@Knightinkarma We don't act like that's something that can be guaranteed. You can decide with whom you share your content. But if it's out there, it's out there. No technical solution can replace human trust - and no technical solution can protect you from having trust violated.

@MikeSofaer @Lum_ No E2E DMs on diaspora* - contents are visible to admins of the node hosting the involved users.

If I were to suggest one feature for Mastodon to add, it would be end-to-end encryption of DMs. "Admins can read your DMs!!1!!" is true for every social network, but is actively being used for anti-Mastodon FUD currently. e2e encryption would elegantly solve that problem (1/2)

Gm frens. The reality of centralisation hit me hard last night. My Twitter audience could be gone in a heartbeat and I'd have to start from scratch. Join me in giving @desofy a go. If it's crap, let's find something else, but let's do it together! Posted using @DesofyApp

@Documentally Unfortunately, not right now :/ we're working on that one - most of the backend work is done, but the UI is not...

I wonder if @joindiaspora could have had its own part of the temporary exodus if it hadn't gone into stasis. Maybe it's lying in wait for Facebook to take a nosedive.

@jondotgov @seeteegee @thekurtwk @Meta @Twitter Well, adding any feature, for example, isn't just your usual web development work, a contributor also has to implement the federation side of things to make that feature work across pod boundaries. This makes projects like diaspora significantly harder to contribute to.

Anyone know of an open source FB replacement that has the reasonably good UX, mobile apps? Ideally, it’s activitypub like #Mastodon

@jondotgov @joindiaspora @thekurtwk Sorry to chime in right in the middle here. As in the case of Linux, there's often fragmentation. I notice that diaspora isn't using ActivityPub. Is it that Diaspora came before AP, or is there some technical issue for the different protocol?

@jondotgov @seeteegee @thekurtwk @Meta @Twitter It's also not a project where you can just throw money on a bunch of contractors, you need to be fairly deep into the project to contribute large chunks in a meaningful way. We've had bug bounties of thousands of dollars and nobody picked them up. For good reasons.
