We traditionally culminate our Memorial Day weekends in #NewBedford with a tribute at the Korean War Memorial. Thank you to everyone who demonstrated their gratitude by coming out despite today’s rain.

My statement on the passing of former Representative Barney Frank:

The John Avery Parker Early Learning Center was opened this school year, and anyone who sets foot in the building can’t overlook the care and energy of its faculty and how much the students feed off of it.

Today the New Bedford @whalingmuseum closed a time capsule that will be placed in the foundation of its new arts building, now under construction. I hope that if someone ever opens it, they’ll conclude that we were trying to make the world better for them.

A new apartment building at a site that was such an eyesore it had a name: “The Hole in the Ground.”

At our annual Holocaust Remembrance ceremony, Amir Cohen, the Director of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Bedford, read aloud the names of the death camps, a poignant tribute to those who perished and a stark reminder of the fragility of democratic institutions.

MSG Ray Como and SFC Gerry Bedard spent the latter part of their Army careers as instructors at New Bedford High School’s JROTC, the oldest such program in the country. Congratulations to both on their retirements, and thank you for tireless devotion to your students.

The New Bedford Film Festival kicks off tonight at the Steeple House Theater, and runs for the next three nights at various downtown locations. It’s getting bigger and better every year.

Today we cut the ribbon at the Flats at 8th, a fabulous, 52-unit apartment building downtown. More housing units will put downward pressure on rents. Many thanks to Duane Jackson who had the vision to turn an old bank into housing, and for the persistence to see it through.

Congratulations to the five new officers we swore in this morning. Your efforts over the course of your careers will be instrumental to the City’s success and the well-being of our residents.

Robert Mueller was a bona fide American hero. From his service as Marine platoon leader in Vietnam, to his multiple stints as a federal prosecutor, to his singular leadership of the FBI, at all times he walked the point for his country.

They’re off! Good luck to all the runners today in the 47th running of the New Bedford Half Marathon.

Strong additions to NBPD’s leadership team, which will enable the department to sustain the improvements in public safety, and maintain the trust of the city’s residents.

If you’ve seen dump trucks full of snow traveling down city streets, the former Aerovox site is one of the dumping sites they might be heading.

Feb. 28 Update:To allow residents access to the city’s main business districts, the City is lifting the parking ban (1) on Acushnet Ave north of Coggeshall St, and (2) Downtown east of County St. The parking ban remains in place for the remainder of the city until further notice.

During a major snow storm, the city’s mechanics work long hours to repair plow trucks. Like a NASCAR pit crew, they get the vehicles back on the road in a hurry. I’m grateful for their unwavering dedication.
