Instinct matters in politics. Overthink and you can underperform. Try to box too clever and you get punched in the mouth by an opponent who trusts their own unrestrained judgment.
Kemi Badenoch’s newfound popularity within her party is the result of trusting her instincts. The Tory leader is finding that no argument is as persuasive as being herself.
Ahead of the King’s Speech debate, Badenoch had worked hard on a script with some well-honed attack points. But the most memorable line was unscripted. When Wes Streeting, still yet to resign as health secretary, rolled his eyes at one of her points, she replied: ‘There’s no point in him giving me dirty looks – we all know what he’s been up to…’ Cue laughter even from the Labour benches as the minister plotting his ascent was smacked down.

This ad perfectly frames Reform’s problem. Recognises the Brexit line is not a runner. But can’t identify a good attack. Andy Burnham is from the area. He can’t credibly be framed as a carpetbagger. Is Nigel Farage seriously going to bowl up to Makerfield and say “I understand your problems better than they guy who grew up round here, lives round here and left Westminster to be Mayor for this area for the past 10 years”.

These results show there is no chance of rebuilding our 2019 coalition. Reform are here to stay.
We can still win with a party to the right of us - but only if we build a new centre-right coalition based on serious, pro-growth policies. 2015 showed it can be done.

It's no good complaining now. Rishi Sunak had every chance to set out a vision during his two years as Prime Minister.
The Tory Party would absolutely have got behind a properly conservative view.

I’m sat in my first Essex County Council meeting on Monday morning, listening to a councillor induction presentation. ‘Any questions?’ asks an officer. A hand goes up. ‘Yes’ says a recently elected Labour member. ‘Do I get a pension as a councillor?’. His first question was about how much money he gets. Not procedure, or meeting dates or where the loos are… but how much cash he can grab. Same old Labour.

If they decide to refer to the Committee, and the Committee out of sheer spite push for the harshest punishment, 10 days suspension. And then push for recall. And get 10% of voters in the constituency to call for a by election, I have no doubt the people of Clacton will re-elect Farage So a waste or time, resources and money. Nigel will profess he was gifted personal security before choosing to stand as an MP. Security he needs as the establishment recklessly villainise him. The establishment will look prickly and punitive, and make Farage appear a martyr to his supporters If he played the messaging right, it could potentially even concretise his support.
