@antonhowes @wraabe @MirandaKaufmann @OED The pivots themselves were always in hardened steel. If the hole was jewelled it was usually in ruby - much easier to pierce than diamond.

Any #twitterstorians know what is meant by "goes on a diamond" in 1792? Dress watch described as:"a very elegant watch and goes on a Diamond"- is this a reference to the precious stone, or the watch hanging from a diamond-shaped thing? @OED not helping. Only other usage...

@antonhowes @wraabe @MirandaKaufmann @OED Sorry, only just seen this (hopeless at this social media thing!). The ref almost certainly means the balance (the osciallating, timekeeping element) has its upper pivot running on a diamond - the ‘endstone’ to provide a harder wearing surface and less prone to oil deterioration.

I found this a striking exhibit in the Jewish museum in Amsterdam, an unused length of fabric printed with yellow stars. Could each one somehow represent someone who escaped? Or were there simply no Jews left for these to get pinned to.
