@migrationliz Japan's Specified Skilled Worker scheme sees private sector actors partner with public training orgs in origin countries to be able to train and hire qualifying workers. Firms like @mos_burger (burger chain), @zenken_IR (healthcare etc), Persol (ag.), etc., in 🇻🇳, 🇮🇩, 🇮🇳... 6/

Who pays for training when it’s only for a job abroad? Skills-based schemes require meeting national language or skills requirements. In Asia, employers and placement agencies now paying to train in origin, ODA also getting involved. Examples in chapter by @migrationliz et al 5/

Latest figures on number of foreigners employed in Japan show 12% annual increase to 2.3M. Much of the increase is in Technical Interns (to transition to new programme) and in the new SSW route (+50% to 200K) Still only 3.5% of total employment but trend is clear.

@piccoli_lo Yes, it's hard to explain the concept of "permanent-type" in an infographic. 😀 The report looks at other categories not covered here: Temporary migrants incl. students Ukrainians with temp protection OECD standardisation of long-term migration captures downstream effects later

@JonathanChaloff I understand this only captures "permanent migration", but it can be misleading. After all, an important share of people who arrive to OECD countries are completely missing from the picture, especially in Figure 1 and Figure 3 here.

@piccoli_lo Humanitarian = definitive status (refugee or other international protection which allows indefinite long term stay). Includes resettlement. These people stay. Asylum applications are requests for protection. If successful, they are then counted as "humanitarian permanent type".

@JonathanChaloff Surely I am missing something here, but how is it possible that in 2023, there have been 2.5 million "new asylum applications" in OECD countries, yet only 0.6 million recorded as "humanitarian"?
