@lmchankins @ayeejuju This is also why they run half-empty airplanes quite frequently. Even though empty seats are wasted money, more frequent departures mean more market share. I cannot stress enough how much airlines are at each other's throats for customers, even to the detriment of profit.

@lmchankins @ayeejuju "Profitable" is not a good word for airlines. Financially they are all, to use a professional phrase, "doodoo dogshit". They must minimize prices at the cost of pretty much everything - including profit - or someone else will undercut them and take their market share.

@ayeejuju Airlines need to maximize seat capacity so the seats can be cheap and they can stay competitive. After deregulation, EVERYTHING is about cutting costs and then cutting price. To airlines, market share is even more important than profitability.
