A little tale about Jenni Murray in Leeds...In February 2019, the first ever Leeds Literature Festival was announced and on the programme was Bradford-born Jenni Murray, who was scheduled to talk about her book, ‘A History of the World in 21 Women’.

I always strive, when I can, to spread sweetness and light. There have been several complaints about it.

@JonnyWorst Remember it well. And at least one of those men protesting a female presenter of Women's Hour, outside a library at a literature festival (hardly Cable Street lads!) was a sex offender... now that's an interesting tale.

@naomi_oh I mis-typed that - she was actually born in Barnsley, not Bradford!

@JonnyWorst When I saw “backlash” I assumed it would be because she was from Bradford! Not because she believed in biology 🤦🏻‍♀️

“…that was bullshit. I did not want to leave @BBCWomansHour. I loved it. I absolutely loved it. But I couldn’t stay in that atmosphere…” In her own words: Jenni Murray, speaking in 2021, on how she was muzzled

Anyway, back in spring 2019 - when trans activism was at its most powerful - Leeds Lit Fest and Jenni Murray showed how straightforward it *should* be to put free expression and artistic freedom into action simply by carrying on.

It was rare to see Jenni Murray on any literature festival programmes after Leeds. Most have either been enthusiastic no-platformers or too scared of what they see as reputational damage. But things are now slowly improving...but very slowly.

Arts leaders who truly believe in freedom of expression are very rare. Most pay lip service at best, but simply don't have the guts. Sally Dunsmore of Oxford Lit Fest is the real deal. We need more like her.

A brilliant piece by the principled Sally Dunsmore: I was branded a Nazi & told I would burn alive for defending free speech. I've run Oxford Literary Festival for 30 years. Our commitment to intellectual freedom will not be dampened by cowardly bullying telegraph.co.uk/gift/db6f43703…

1/4 In 2009, when Olivia Bailey was Women's Officer for the National Union of Students (NUS), I asked for a meeting with her, to ask if she would consider overturning the decision by the NUS to no-platform me
