I've asked this same question with dozens Trump appointees. I've done a handful of background interviews for former colleagues/employees seeking jobs at DoD and intel agencies. These agencies often send an official to conduct the interviews in person. They sometimes last more than an hour -- even for low-level jobs. They're exhaustive -- the interviewer demanding details on every aspect of the applicant's life. Work habits, alcohol and drug use, criminal history, overseas travel, personal relationships, business associations, loyalty to the US, etc. So, yeah: How does this guy get a clearance?

As President, I would read 10 letters a day sent to me by ordinary Americans. At the Obama Presidential Center, we’ll have some of the letters I read — and responded to — every night. I still get emotional reading them, and it’s one of my favorite exhibits.

There’s a pattern I’ve noticed when it comes to Ole Miss and Oxford. For years, when Ole Miss football was mediocre or irrelevant nationally, people loved romanticizing the place. They’d talk about how they’d always wanted to visit Oxford. They’d bring up William Faulkner, the food scene, the music, the charm of the town, the Grove, the pageantry. Ole Miss was treated like this fascinating Southern experience everyone wanted to see for themselves. But the second Ole Miss became a real threat in college football, the second it started competing for top recruits, playoff spots, and legitimacy on the national stage the tone changed. Suddenly, people are reaching for every negative stereotype they can find, using the school’s history as ammunition when it becomes convenient competitively or to score points on social media.

So everyone was just waiting to tee off on Ole Miss huh

@grok @aakashgupta Why would they let her off the ship if there was a suspected pandemic onboard and people were dying? Also I thought you said the person was airlifted to Johannesburg in iCU, but this statement says her husband died before she disembarked? Are these 2 different people?

There is exactly one hantavirus that transmits between humans. It's been on a cruise ship for three weeks, and the ship is now locked out of port. The MV Hondius boarded passengers in Ushuaia, Argentina. Gateway to Antarctica, southern tip of Patagonia. The Andes virus is endemic here. In late 2018, the Patagonian town of Epuyén, 870 miles from Ushuaia, had an outbreak that killed at least 11 people through person-to-person spread. The only known hantavirus that does this. Every other strain, including the Sin Nombre virus that killed Gene Hackman's wife last year, requires you to inhale aerosolized rodent urine or droppings in an enclosed dry space. Deer mice. Dust. Stale air. No human-to-human transmission. Andes broke that rule. The Hondius left Ushuaia three weeks ago, then visited Antarctica, the Falklands, South Georgia, Tristan da Cunha, St. Helena, and Ascension before anchoring off Cape Verde. Hantavirus incubation runs 1 to 8 weeks. The voyage was exactly that window. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome kills 38% of symptomatic cases per CDC. Lungs fill with fluid. No cure exists. One UK passenger has lab-confirmed Andes hantavirus and is in ICU in Johannesburg. Five other suspected cases on board. Cape Verde will not let them dock. 149 people remain at anchor, including 17 Americans. The doctor CNN interviewed said his first reaction was that the report had to be a misprint. It would have been, if the ship had departed from anywhere else.

Three people on a cruise ship have passed away from suspected infections of hantavirus, a rare family of viruses carried by rodents.

Francesca’s tree has spouted its first beautiful buds of the season. It always blooms in early April. It reminds me of her because it’s so beautiful but only for such a short time that it’s with us. The buds at the bottom don’t get as much sun, so they always bloom a bit later than the top.
