I got an angry email after my PSLF loans were forgiven. The gist: "I paid for your loans with my tax dollars and you didn't even pay them back." That's a gross oversimplification. But it pulled up something deeper. Crabs in a bucket. This idea that if something was hard for me, it should be hard for you too. I see it everywhere in medicine. Here's what people forget: back in the day medical school used to cost a lot less. It was more aligned with the value it provided. It was easier to pay back loans AND compensation was higher relative to debt. The game changed but the rules didn't update. So when someone in the next generation finds a legitimate path through a broken system, the reaction shouldn't be resentment. It should be "good." Just because something was tougher for us doesn't mean the next generation should have to suffer through it too. That's progress.

Clients who work with us face a particular bias of mine: Leaning towards simplicity always Even potentially at the sacrifice of some wealth creation, if it’s a major hassle and time suck (for them), forget about it. Of course it’s up to them. But they know what I think.

The True Dangers of Overwork (hat tip @khemaridh) I read this last week and felt like I lost my breath. This rings true for most every physician I know. You lose the ability to think clearly about your life. You put your head down and work harder. Every problem is treated as a money problem. So your spending increases. And you lose your creative problem solving skills.

You know what’s really egregious? Standing on your soapbox for years yelling about the abuse of whole life insurance sales to doctors. But then recommending agents who actually prioritize that after they get their clients in on term life policies.

Money is a tool to help you live your authentic life. But too often, we think money is the end goal. Saving for retirement is another achievement to cross off the list. Your goals aren’t going to happen without money. We focus on exploring your purpose and values so we can help use your money to build your best life.

@olsonplanner 😂😂 Just saw someone else talking about how 401k is a scam. I’m a fan of investing in alternative assets but a solid tax deferred fund is still foundational

100% of people who invested in their 401(k) have died, or will die. You’ve been warned.

Have you ever considered how your student loans are really impacting your financial trajectory? If you’re not tackling them with a strategy, they could be chaining you to a paycheck instead of paving the way to financial independence. I once had a colleague tell me they wanted to die with their student debt so the loan company didn't "win." The reality however is that if you want to beat the loan company, you need to pay back the loans as soon as possible so they get minimal interest! Create a loan payback plan...whether that involves loan forgiveness or just aggressive pay back.

Many doctors dismiss financial education, thinking they’ll earn enough to avoid money woes. But the truth is: without proper knowledge, even a high income won't guarantee wealth. It's not how much you earn that makes you wealthy. It's what you do with the money you earn! Start mastering your finances now—it's just as vital as perfecting your craft.

The applies to doctors as well! This is why I work towards FIRE. I love my job as a recon plastic surgeon. I don't plan to retire anytime soon. But I am employed. And I know the administration could change and my job could no longer be a good fit. Financial freedom allows us to be flexible and move on when the time is right without having to fit ourselves into a job that doesn't work well for us. This allows us to practice better medicine

@SMB_Attorney I’m a doctor and navigating it for an elderly family member was a massive and complicated task even with the benefit of reaching doctors involved in his care directly. It’s scary

I’m a corporate lawyer who was educated at one of the top law schools in America. I struggle to understand how to navigate our healthcare system. It horrifies me to think how badly the average person is taken advantage of when they need help the most.

Bingo! Honestly what got her on board with real estate investing was the snippet in Rich Dad Poor Dad where he. Uses the example of buying a rental property and using that cash flow to buy a luxury car so now you have the car and future cash flow instead of just the car. So this was a vision 5 years in the making for her!

The secret to going from -$520K in debt to $1.5M net worth in 5 years? Finding your "why". My “why” has always been about freedom: time with family and optionality so I can practice on my terms. Before you do anything financially, focus on the “why,” not a number. Financial freedom is about building your ideal life. Money is a tool to help get there. Don’t let an invisible finish line rob you of happiness today.

This is the key to building wealth. You build wealth by increasing and investing the margin between what you earn and what you spend. Tracking every $1 gives you control over what you spend. Once you do that, you can bui and invest your margin and build wealth Don’t matter how much you make.
