Thanks all for kind words about the @BiochemSoc prize. Very honoured and grateful to all my lab mates and colleagues. Nice this happened during #BSCBDB22—sorry had to leave early (positive Covid). Apologies to those I talked to and danced with (was negative before the party)!

If, like me, your wondering how it is possible that someone like Gavin Williamson gets a Knighthood, this might shed some light. Hard to follow if you don’t know a bit about it, but potentially so scary.
Carole Cadwalladr@carolecadwalla

NEW: Boris Johnson awards Gavin Williamson a knighthood. Why *now*? In middle of Russian crisis? He was appointed defence secretary in Nov 2017 at exact moment, FBI revealed its Trump-Russia investigation began in London. Is this relevant? 1/ theguardian.com/politics/2022/…

Any data yet on new strain being more dangerous? Confusing messages so far: Whitty seemed to say we don’t know, someone on radio yesterday said hospital surge in London due to new strain, and Shapps just said 11/11 people infected at wedding all asymptomatic. Huh?

Ignore the title. This is short, has lots of words that I had to look up, but to me it gets to the core of why the USA is so divided. The Rotting of the Republican Mind nytimes.com/2020/11/26/opi…

During Sutcliffe’s 1981 trial at the Old Bailey, Sir Michael Havers, the attorney general who was prosecuting, said of the victims: “Some were prostitutes, but perhaps the saddest part of the case is that some were not. The last six attacks were on totally respectable women.”

I just read this and couldn’t believe it. This was said during the trial of The Yorkshire Ripper in 1981. To my knowledge, nobody noticed or complained. I was 17, and a radical lefty (or so I thought). How is this possible?

Such sad news @AngelikaAmon. I remember several late nights talking science and Mick Jagger into the early hours. So much fun and vitality! In reality I didn’t know Angelika well, but I feel so sad and such a huge loss to science.
MIT Biology@MITBiology

Today we mourn the loss of Professor Angelika Amon. She was a remarkable person, an incredible and creative scientist, a lively and spirited colleague, and devoted mentor. Her impact and legacy live on, and will be perpetuated through everyone she touched.

‘We believe that there are sharp lines between good and bad. But we all have dark passions inside, waiting to be stirred by a demagogue who can convince us that decency is for the weak, that democracy is naïve, and that kindness and respect for others are political correctness.’

I have to admit that my long-held belief that you should never wish pain or suffering on anybody is being sorely tested this morning.

As usual, I would like to highlight the extreme paucity of @ERC_Research funding going to #Visegrad countries (6 out of 436 grants!) and to Eastern Europe in general. As every year, I refuse to accept that science is that much worse in those countries. It is not!

This is remarkable. I sort of knew this was happening, but had no idea of the scale or how brazen it was. This needs to be investigated. When secret coronavirus contracts are awarded without competition, it's deadly serious | George Monbiot theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

This is comedy gold. He knows he’s lying, he knows everybody else knows he’s lying, and he thinks it’s funny (presumably because he thinks it doesn’t matter!). The UK Government going full Donald Trump. Will they get away with it?
Ben Watters@KorrBard

Possibly the most Michael Gove response to a question I've seen yet. Michael Gove tries to claim he too would take a 60 mile round trip with his wife to test his eyesight, yet can't actually bring himself to try to finish the lie. Astounding.
