OpenAI's AI broke out of a locked test environment, got onto the internet, and hacked into Hugging Face's servers. It did this entirely on its own. No human told it to. Here's what happened in plain English. OpenAI was testing how good its newest AI models are at hacking. They put the AI on a locked computer with no internet access and gave it a cybersecurity challenge to solve. The AI couldn't solve it the normal way. So it started looking for a way out. It found a software bug that nobody knew about. It used that bug to escape the locked computer and get onto the internet. Once online, the AI figured out that Hugging Face, a platform where AI companies store their models and data, might have the answers to its test. It found stolen login details and discovered another unknown bug in Hugging Face's software. It combined both to break into their servers and grab the test answers. It did all of this to cheat on a test. Hugging Face's security team caught it and shut it down. Both companies are now working together on the investigation. The part that should get your attention is that nobody programmed any of this. The AI picked its own targets, chained together multiple attack methods, and pulled it off across two different companies' systems without a single human telling it what to do.

People go all-out for anything now. It's all about appearance, as you said. Anecdotally, my friend lives very close to a number of players on the Phillies. His family got invited to the birthday party of one of the players kids (she is 3 years old). He told me there were over 50 videographers at the party, four bounce houses, several actresses dressed as Disney princesses, and more food than you can imagine. Easily over $100K... for a toddler's birthday party. While I understand this is a child of a professional athlete making tens of millions of dollars each year, there are loads of regular people who do this as well.

Saw two stats today and the contrast is striking: “Nearly 6 in 10 couples told The Knot they’re postponing buying a home to prioritize their wedding (averaging $36k in 2025).” and “63% of millennials report they can’t afford to own a home.” I’d love to know the overlap.

@moneyballinvest Those are great points. It makes me think of Morgan Housel’s financial hamster wheel, where it’s a lot of “keeping up appearances” spending. It’s hard to jump off that hamster wheel, especially regarding such an important day, and the event economy knows that fully well.

I think it's two things. First, younger people are having less kids or no kids at all. With that in mind, buying a home becomes less important as a couple can still live reasonably well in an apartment. Second, the party / event economy gets bigger every year. The reason is simple: Social media. Simply put, new trends / themes are making people more concerned posting experiences online (even it's just a one-day party like a wedding) instead of saving up and building equity in an appreciating asset like real estate.

I just keep watching over and over

I'm glad Jordan Walker said this. Growing up, I can't tell you how many times I heard: "Baseball is boring." "Go play football." I was even called an "Oreo" because I chose baseball. There was definitely pressure to play the sports everyone else was playing. Baseball changed my life! That's why seeing players like Jordan Walker embrace being role models matters. The more kids who see someone who looks like them thriving in baseball, the more they'll realize it's a path that's open to them too. I hope more kids feel free to choose the game they love...not just the one everyone expects them to play.
