They never will because the alternatives are worse, more unpopular taxes or draconian cuts to public safety budgets. KC voters are smart enough to figure that out every 5 years, fortunately.
Patrick Tuohey, GED@PatrickTuohey

A weak defense of the #KansasCity earning tax suggests #KCMO leaders, "should probably start thinking a little bit harder about what a fairer, more sustainable funding model actually looks like" They should. But they haven't. There's no indication they ever will. Voters must act instead. kansascity.com/opinion/opn-co…

Necessary but not sufficient. I’ve heard many people argue that zoning reform in KC doesn’t matter. Look at all the empty lots! It does matter. We need to build on the success of our revitalizing neighborhoods. Squashing down density in those places only hurts us.
M. Nolan Gray 🥑@mnolangray

"Zoning reform alone will not save the Rust Belt or other depopulated places, but it is nevertheless imperative for encouraging nascent revitalization efforts."

@pcriley If they’re not seeking incentives, that’s a positive. Beyond construction jobs there won’t be many. Not a particularly positive use for downtown, if the three other data center/telecom sites in the CBD are any indication.

@JoshBoehm Seemed dumb to me but I guess there is real value in the fiber infrastructure there. If the investors want to build this without incentives, provide a big property tax windfall and a bunch of jobs, I say let em rip.

Minnesota Commuter Rail spotted in the BNSF 10th Street Yard in NKC. Maybe someone here can put it to good use? 😁

I would love to hear the story behind these granite curb stop-protected bike lanes that nevertheless kept the flexposts in DC.

Today we are featuring Shawn and his gravel bike for #TransitTuesday! Unlike your childhood bicycle, this “SUV of bikes” can fit an entire trip to the grocery store 😮 What do you use for your heavy-duty shopping trips? Let us know in the comments.

There’s endless examples of romanticism about the city, and about romanticizing the country. What’s the best art that romanticizes the suburbs?

@BarsottiKlb @Pattiwestside Sorry, though I do think the counter-example is helpful. Obv I would rather spend $ in RM than plaza, and I want businesses here to succeed. But business turnover and relocation happens all the time for lots of reasons. Overall enviro in RM is pretty positive.

The reality of what happens when you remove parking minimums, as analyzed by the experts in KC. No, not an overnight car-free urbanist paradise. Each development trying to figure out how to balance the site constraints, costs, and future revenue. clerk.kcmo.gov/View.ashx?M=F&…

@Pattiwestside And, I don’t believe that the current zoning code is successfully mitigating the parking issue. The CBD and River Market are proof that you can eliminate off street parking requirements and manage public parking to get better results

if your city builds one of these we immediately know that your city is a joke and your municipal government is incredibly ignorant and gullible
