The surprising strength in John Stott’s global ministry? Listening. “Double listening” as he called it—listening to the Word and the world. A few of my thoughts about Stott’s evangelical legacy: preachingtoday.com/skills/2021/pr…

@judsontaylor It's too difficult to choose! I guess I'll go with TDS because of how many details he chronicles for us. But Steer is an easier place to begin, and Chapman provides the most interesting analysis of the intersection between Stott's life and wider cultural trends. All good!

In which you learn that the beloved professor who runs CASE can also play bass! But for real, I’m one of many Wheaton Alumni who can tell you that @vbacote is the real deal beyond the classroom.

@glenscrivener Hi Glen. How do you think Stott would reply to your critique of his ‘colossal mistake’? Of course, he’d reply charitably. But do you think he’d say that you understood his metaphor as he used it?

In "Between Two Worlds" John Stott highlights 6 biblical metaphors for preachers: heralds, farmers, stewards, shepherds, ambassadors, and workers. He then runs with his own metaphor: bridge-builder. I genuinely hate to disagree with Uncle John but This Was A Colossal Mistake 🧵

@jake_meador Can you say a little more about the boomer disappearance? I’m a pastor who would be new to that discussion.

Something that is too easily forgotten in discussions about deconstructing faith: Remember that classic line that was so famous from Matt Chandler? “Jesus wants the rose!” What if Jesus wants the deconstructor, too? That’s a really important part of of my own faith journey.

The word "deconstruction" gets our hearts beating—maybe with exhilaration, fears, frustration, or other emotions. I started writing this a few months ago. In the writing process, it turned out to be more meaningful to me than I expected. mereorthodoxy.com/what-augustine…

Part of my message at a youth retreat this week: Having doubts is not the opposite of faith. Instead, having doubts is part of the journey of faith—at least it has been for me.

I find myself asking the question: why is domineering leadership spreading in American churches these days? I don’t have the answers yet. But the question seems very important.

I’ve seen it too many times. When leaders care more about their reputation than other people, they will run over other people to protect or build their own reputation. This happens in Jesus’s church. This should not be so.
