I joined Councillor Jamaal Myers in Scarborough North today to knock at doors and listen to residents about their priorities. Not only was it a great opportunity to learn, we also had a lot of fun together. I even got to know some of the local pets! Jamaal is a really kind, smart, hard working and thoughtful representative for his community. I’m really proud to support him.

When there was a brazen and terrifying shooting at Salsa on St. Clair a week ago, Toronto Police, Toronto Fire and EMS Paramedics were there for us. Faith leaders and community members stepped up to care for their neighbours. I’ve seen remarkable acts of heroism and kindness that I’ll never forget. Yesterday, officers from 13 Division and I visited business owners and had conversations with residents on St. Clair West. We are united, and working together, as every one of us has been deeply impacted by what happened. Our focus must always be on improving community safety - and on being there for our neighbours and supporting our local small businesses on St. Clair West. Together, we will.

Doug Ford’s reckless “plan” for Toronto’s waterfront isn’t a done deal yet. We have a better plan - a balanced combination of healthy communities, recreational opportunities, amazing parks, economic development and a regional airport on the island that’s easy to deal with and works. Ford’s pie-in-the-sky proposal to bring jets to Billy Bishop Airport and increase it to take on 10 million passengers (with no public plan or business case) would cost $5 billion, increase the price of air fares, worsen traffic, pave a massive runway and blast wall on our lake, impact housing and affect the health and livability of our waterfront neighbourhoods. Old City Hall is an iconic architectural masterpiece that we’re working on preserving and bringing back to life to serve the public again- and, to include a Toronto Museum to share our city’s many stories. This evening, we hosted a special screening of Michael Kainer’s “A Thing of Beauty: the Early Years of Toronto’s Old City Hall” in the “new” city hall council chambers. The film portrays the vibrant history of Old City Hall and looks to the future of this precious landmark. Thank you to Michael, and the local Councillor Chris Moise, for your contributions to this special event. And to everyone who attended: thank you for your love of our city!

The Toronto Police Service, along with Toronto Fire and EMS, responded very professionally on Saturday night at Salsa on St. Clair- they’ve been there for our community and have my gratitude, and complete support, as they pursue their investigation. The Deputy Chief was very clear in his statement about how brazen and unacceptable the shootings at Salsa on St. Clair were. Chief Demkiw has spoken strongly about how anyone who picks up a gun and kills people with so many innocent bystanders around should face first degree murder charges. Along with work at the federal level on law reforms and necessary efforts to prevent illegal guns crossing the border from the United States, every level of government needs to proactively invest in initiatives to provide options, opportunities and support for youth at risk so that they can take the right path in life and never pick up a gun in the first place. I’ve submitted a motion to this coming City Council meeting requesting enhancements to protect public safety at festivals and large gatherings across our city. If we work together, we can make our communities safer.

I’ve submitted a motion to committee on protecting public safety at festivals and large community gatherings. Thank you to Councillor Alejandra Bravo for her partnership and Chief of Police, Myron Demkiw for his thoughtful collaboration.

This evening, a small ecumenical group of faith leaders brought our St. Clair West community together for a quiet vigil to remember, and to heal. It was truly beautiful.   Una Noche de Presencia: Vigilia de Sanidad en St. Clair/An evening of Presence: A Vigil for Healing
