These conversations are so important. @bethanyhallam and @MartyGriffinKD are oil and water, but when we come together and talk honestly about the issues, sometimes the human element can break down walls and lead to solutions.
Marty Griffin@MartyGriffinKD

She's outspoken, unapologetic, controversial, and just won re-election to Allegheny County Council. Come along with me and @bethanyhallam as we walk downtown to talk about problems facing our city, our region, and some controversial solutions #pgh #makingadifference #getmarty

In less than 5 words, what is the biggest issue or problem that we face in our society/culture today?

I know it's not a perfect data set, and it's a relatively small sample size (75 years), but it seems to point that despite this heat wave not being historical, our overall climate is moving in the wrong direction...

Using the linear trendline, the overall mean temperature trend in our city has increased from 50.5 to 52.2. This is an increase of 1.7 degrees. This outpaces the global average of 0.14 degrees per decade.

As we go into a heat wave over the next few days in Pittsburgh, I thought it could be interesting to look at some climate data for our city to see some history on high temps in our area, and look at trends for our overall temperatures. (THREAD)

@billpeduto Any understanding of what impacts a failure like this could have? Is it true that the facilities on that island are mostly for when power usage is high or peak hours? Just wondering if there should be concern for mass outages?

@Dan_Grzybek Any idea what the impact of this could be? I'm reading plenty about the fire, but very little on what could happen as a result of this.

For those concerned/curious, Brunot Island appears to have a combined cycle natural gas turbine/generator and three diesel powered generators. Nothing nuclear related (but still a serious issue).
Pittsburgh Public Safety@PghPublicSafety

ALERT: Pittsburgh Public Safety bureaus are currently responding to a large fire on Brunot Island. @DuquesneLight is on scene and reporting it is the result of a reactor that catastrophically failed. Please stand by for updates.

@pgh_scanner @awSAMM I'm confused by all of this. What is the impact of this? I would imagine it would have some impact on the grid in Pittsburgh, but there are very few outages reported?

@awSAMM It’s like a 300 plus MW generating station. High voltage makes sense.

Brunot Island. Fire department will be taking ferries to get equipment and firefighters over to the fire. Sounds like they are waiting for Duquesne light approval before they can start work.

@arbybeast When they were here in the Square, I never understood the hype. When it switched to Square One, I did become a fan of their chive biscuit breakfast sandwiches, but 11 dollars for a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit was tough to justify.

Oh my... Found this while cleaning out stuff too. A 2004 letter from my college, explaining my punishment for consuming alcohol while on a college trip to NYC (I was 21 at the time). Christian college culture was a trip...

@brad5320 My college was right across town from Notre Dame and they certainly didn't do this either. Evangelical colleges were a whole different creature from Catholic schools.

@JoshMiser83 This is bonkers. I went to Duquesne, and they absolutely did not do things like this for students who were 21+.
