It’s one of the disappointing things about Stardust, a 2020 biopic of Bowie that didn’t get the music rights, being a dud because I think a biopic that doesn’t get to lean on existing goodwill for the music has real potential, but that one sucked and lack of music was blamed

i actually think an MJ movie without the music would be incredibly interesting and probably what's needed to really get into the dark shit. don't give people a second to get distracted by that billie jean intro

Most of the people who get angry at critics for not liking any big movie these days aren’t even engaging with criticism. They’re upset about Rotten Tomatoes scores and crap like that. This isn’t art for them. It’s sports.

So both those excuses actually support the idea of it being a creatively compromised, hastily restructured film and neither reason compels me to see it

So…we don’t know how Rotten Tomatoes works, we don’t know what film criticism is, we don’t know what objectivity and subjectivity are, but we do know how to cape for studios that we have no significant financial interest in.

Saying there needs to be a “major shift” as if there isn’t an active and ongoing effort to sideline critics in favour of influencers and paid shills

We’ve legit lost the plot. I honestly have zero idea what people are looking for these days but there needs to be a major shift in criticism. The movie I saw was well written, well directed, beautifully shot, insanely well performed and the sound was amazing. Are we “film” critics or not. We’re supposed to help paint the picture of what an audience can anticipate and this score is not even close to that picture, objectively.
