Sort of blown away by Gwyneth Paltrow in MARTY SUPREME and the way she just walks away with the film. How did this marvelous turn get so little awards traction?

@CinemaTweets1 Exactly! No dramatic tension after the first 20min. So much potential. Puzzling in every way.

A House of Dynamite (🌟🌟) isn’t just bad storytelling, it’s another example of Kathryn Bigelow’s failure to say something meaningful about geopolitical affairs. Put your political beliefs aside, this is a mediocre film at its absolute best & I welcome anyone to try and prove otherwise. Sure, A House of Dynamite asks a worthy question- what would happen if a nuclear warhead was headed to the United State. But it fails to properly engage with this question & ultimately fails to even entertain its audience. I very much enjoy the political thriller genre & wanted to enjoy this film. But this is without a doubt one of the year’s biggest disappointments. Part of why I say A House of Dynamite is poor storytelling is because the same story is repeated from three different vantage points. In other words, the plot is not thick enough here: we learn within the first 20 minutes that an unidentified nuclear warhead is headed towards the United States. Within the first 20 minutes of the film, which is told through Situation Room leader Olivia Walker (Rebecca Ferguson), we specifically learn that 1) the warhead is headed for Chicago & 2) the U.S. doesn’t know who is responsible. From there, the same series of events is told from the perspective of a U.S. military base lead by General Brady (Tracy Letts) & then eventually the third and final perspective which is from the U.S. President (Idris Elba). From just a sheer storytelling perspective, by telling us within the first twenty minutes that the warhead is headed for Chicago & the U.S. can’t identify who sent the warhead, there is truly not much plot left to tell. Nothing else really happens. Instead, we’re left with the same, repetitious reaction from Walker then Brady then the President. We gain nothing by having the same series of events repeated over and over from a different perspective. Instead, as an audience we actually lose something- which is the film’s momentum or any intensity that was created in the first act. Then there’s the political messaging. I think this story is at its strength when both the President and General Brady have to explore whether to de-escalate nuclear war or preemptively strike other countries before they can launch their arsenals. The problem here is the dialogue or discussion around such an important, sensitive topic is utterly pathetic. There is zero consideration, thought, or accountability factored into these discussions from General Brady or the President that properly accounts for the loss of life in *other countries*. It’s like this entire film operates on the premise that loss of life outside of the United States is negligible. Not only are we left with a paper-thin plot, we’re left with paper-thin dialogue that does not rise to the importance of this film’s subject matter. Lastly, the performances. You would think with a cast that features actors like Ferguson, Ilba, Jared Harris, and more would thrive- but because of how this film is edited and because of how this screenplay is written, none of the performances stick. I am a massive Ferguson fan- but her talents are wasted in this film, as is this entire ensemble. We never see her again after the first act & in that first act, we’re only given a taste of what she can really bring to the film. This is the case with nearly every performance. Why tease us and then pull the rug out from under our feet? It’s a lost opportunity for every actor involved. I really looked forward to A House of Dynamite going into 2025. I’m really disappointed to say this is not a good film.

@BilgeEbiri This film is shockingly bad and sentimental in the worst, most obvious ways. Also, this is the modt confoundong Idris Elba performance I’ve seen. What was he doing?

I loved Kathryn Bigelow's A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE, a film that a lot of people seem to be interpreting as a fantasy (read: propaganda) of American power and competence, when in fact it is the exact opposite of that. vulture.com/article/review…

On May 8th, I lost a piece of me. My Son Caleb fell victim to a sickness not talked about enough, suicide. Caleb knew my love of the Ottawa @Senators and was well aware of the #Sens community I was involved with. We attended our last game together on March 13th. RIP my boy! Xoxo
