Bab petrol diesel ini, kita kena cakap dengan jujur. Malaysia hari ini bukan Malaysia tahun 2008. Dulu, pengeluaran minyak mentah kita jauh lebih tinggi daripada penggunaan dalam negara. Memang ada buffer. Sekarang tidak lagi. Pengeluaran minyak kita sudah turun daripada sekitar 700,000 tong sehari satu masa dulu kepada lebih kurang 340,000 tong sehari sekarang. Tetapi penggunaan petrol dan diesel terus naik, dan setakat 2023 sudah sekitar 480,000 tong sehari. Maknanya apa? Maknanya kita tak boleh lagi hidup dengan tahyul lama konon negara ini masih ada ruang besar untuk main tanggung subsidi macam dulu. Sebab itu bila subsidi cecah berbilion ringgit sebulan, itu bukan angka kecil. Itu duit rakyat yang tak boleh digunakan untuk perkara lain. Malangnya, kerajaan gagal menerangkan benda ini dengan baik. Kalau diagnosis tak betul, negara akan terus buat keputusan yang salah.
