David Allan Coe…He was one of my favorite musicians as a teenager. To this day, I know the words to every song he wrote. One of my childhood memories is of my family making the 16 hour drive from Tennessee to Oklahoma in our van and listening to his album along the route. I played that cassette for years until it popped. By that time, CD’s were out and I instantly replaced that busted cassette with the same ol’ album on CD. Many years later in the late 1990’s, I was lucky enough to run into him in a truck stop. His tour bus was fueling up and it was pure dumb luck. He lived quite a rough life back in those days. He was 56 years old, but he looked 100. It was a surreal experience to be standing in the middle of a Tennessee truck stop parking lot talking to the outlaw country music legend himself. He was such a cool and humble old dude. One would have never known he was famous. Those were in fact “the good ol’ days.” There will never be another David Allan Coe. RIP Legend.
