Hiiii so I’ve seen the comments and I will say that my value & worth isn’t rooted in the male gaze, so it doesn’t affect me. However ladies, please use me as an example of how contradictory the male gaze can be. I posted my weight gain last summer, I got shamed. I posted my weight loss, I got shamed. You’ll never “win” according to external opinions. That’s why self-validation matters.

The em dash agenda, the complex sentences agenda, the thoughtful, witty, and vivid prose. Oh these are MY sort of writers. Nowadays editors chop, chop, chop into synthetic, clinical sentences that have no character or drama.

Vibe Magazine’s 'Next' featured short write-ups on Black artists just as they were on the verge of blowing up. Here is what the magazine had to say about Maxwell (1994), D’Angelo (1995), Eric Benét (1996) and Musiq Soulchild (2000).

People need reflection. I regret not having more time with you. Your undeniable beauty and talent were not of this world, and a presence not of this world needs protection in a world that covets light and the anointing of God. You sir, moved us, stirred us, inspired and even intimidated others to action with your genius. Thank you for being a beacon of light to a generation and beyond who had no remembrance of the legacy that preceded us. Thank you for charting the course and for making space during a time when no similar space really existed. You imaged a unity of strength and sensitivity in Black manhood to a generation that only saw itself as having to be one or the other. It is my earnest prayer that you are in peace, far away from selfishness, fear and/or controlling interests. Far from possessiveness, far from greed, far from manipulation, far from exploitation, far from intentionally designed chaos and that you Brother are in peace, in bliss and in eternal light and fulfillment with our Father in heaven. I Love you and I miss you. May God grant peace and shelter to your family, true friends and genuine appreciators, Brother, King.

Shonda Rhimes was so right. “Doing the thing undoes the fear.” Once you do it, its not as scary as you thought. Or maybe it was, and you made it out alive. But the key is just doing the thing.
