@conorowens94 The problem is really the umbra test. It means a significant fraction avoids the Earth's shadow. Same trouble with plate defect hypothesis...

Detecting transients in old photographic plates presents unique challenges: visual inspection alone is prone to floods of false detections unless combined with careful photometric and morphometric measurements. This diagnostic step based on measurements is essential to avoid cataloguing noise instead of genuine transients. To improve data quality, our recent work therefore relies on automated sample selection across all POSS-I red plates. I’m proud of the work led by my brilliant colleague Enrique Solano, who developed rigorous protocols to separate genuine point sources from artefacts. These methods have been the backbone of our studies since 2022 — and he has continued refining them ever since. It was within this highly curated sample that the well-known triple transient was detected, as well as we did the search for aligned transients. Science doesn’t always give answers immediately, but through incremental work, diagnostics and improved methodology we continue working towards understanding. academic.oup.com/mnras/article/…

This is a preprint of a paper now under review. We first tried in 2022, but it was too early for the journals. Years later, with better methods, we gave it another go. The key question has been: are the transients real, or plate defects? Well, there seems to be a clear deficit of transients in the Earth’s shadow. If correct, that demonstrates they’re highly reflective objects with flat surfaces (think mirrors, glass...) — and transients are sunlight glints. It's interesting that there were reflective objects that close to Earth prior to the existence of satellites, but we don't know what they were. For all we know at this point they're something with a mundane explanation.
