oh you know what might be difficult to explain to the next generation? teletext. before digital tv, there was analog tv. and yet it had a digital unidirectional/read-only internet-like service accessed via the tv remote that visually resembled a zx spectrum game or something

@hikari_no_yume @Daanniii6 the finnish one has a programming interface you can use to fetch its contents (developer.yle.fi/en/api/index.h…) and I've been thinking about combining that with github.com/ali1234/raspi-… to make it generate teletext signals for a TV to receive

being bilingual is utterly mundane for something like half the people on this planet and yet it is a mind-opening thing that's like… hard to communicate to people who literally have only ever spoken one language in their lives

@JuEeHa @razerx100 there's also the Sprachraum thing, everything being in europe seems to mean there's some parallel evolutions and heavy borrowing of words and meanings

@razerx100 @hikari_no_yume within these branches the languages started diverging from each other around 1000 to 1500 years ago, so they're still rather similar
I'd expect japanese and the ryuukyuu languages to be comparable here in the level of similarity

@razerx100 @hikari_no_yume the vast majority of languages in europe are part of the indo-european language family, and further most belong to one of three of its branches: germanic (e.g. english, swedish), romance (e.g. french, romanian), and slavic (e.g. polish, bulgarian)
