The referee made a clear factual call on the pitch, after evident contact on Alexis Mac Allister, there is no credible basis to classify that decision as a clear and obvious error, and the existence of contact alone removes any legitimate ground for VAR to intervene and reverse the penalty. VAR has no authority to re-referee subjective situations, or to replace the referee’s on-field judgement in cases like this, its role is strictly limited, and that limit was completely ignored. This stands as one of the most severe misapplications of VAR at the highest level of football, the consequences are decisive, a converted penalty in that moment would have fundamentally changed the course of the match. Decisions like this do not just affect results, they seriously undermine the integrity of the game.
