It sounds lovely but in reality? Virtually impractical. Wholly unmanageable. A long post ✍🏾 China has existed for centuries with long periods of unified and centralised single statehood, albeit with episodes of fragmentation. That is not true of Africa. While Africa’s existing borders are partly a colonial creation, pre-colonial Africa was not borderless. Numerous existed of various kingdoms, chiefdoms, and clans each with their own governance. That is, there were even more “countries” pre-colonisation than exist today. Now compressing all of that complexity into what would be a single state with 54 provinces and ~2000 languages? I’m not sure that there is even a critical mass across the continent that desires that due to its virtual impracticality. Forcing it would be permanent chaos, resistance, instability and likely warfare, leaving Africa in far, far, far worse condition. More African solidarity? Coordination? Absolutely. 100%. Gimme, I’ll sign. And no, this is not a perspective of ideology or exceptionalism. It is the plain cold realities of governance. What you think should happen does not mean it can happen. Africa is not a country. It never has been.
