I could be completely wrong, but this is how I interpret Oda's writing. Whitebeard wasn't simply given the title of "World's Strongest Man." He earned it over decades through his overwhelming physical strength, indomitable spirit, legendary reputation, and the terrifying power of the Gura Gura no Mi.... the ability said to be capable of destroying the world. His rivalry with Roger, the Pirate King himself, cemented that image. A title like that isn't automatic; it's built through countless feats until the entire world acknowledges it... Same principle applies to Mihawk. He's the "World's Strongest Swordsman," and I believe Oda treats that title as an unbreakable rule of the story. If you challenge Mihawk (with a Sword as your choice of weapon), you lose. That's the narrative weight of his title. That doesn't mean Mihawk automatically defeats every character in the series. Someone who doesn't fight as a swordsman can still challenge him through other abilities, Devil Fruits, or unconventional combat. But if your primary style is swordsmanship, then Oda has effectively written himself into a corner... in a good way. The title has to mean something... That's why Mihawk's reputation is so incredible. He stands above monsters who wield blades... Shanks, Roger, Rocks .. if truly fought as a swordsman & which they are, Big Mom with Napoleon, King Harald if he wielded a sword, and perhaps even Whitebeard, whose bisento is classified as one of the Supreme Grade Blades.... Remember "Mihawk's curiosity" toward Whitebeard at Marineford may even hint that he wanted to measure the gap between himself and the man who stood at the pinnacle of the world. This also leads to an interesting thought about Zoro. After losing to Mihawk, Zoro swore that he would never lose to another swordsman again... I think Oda intends to honor that promise throughout the story. Every swordsman Zoro faces from that point onward is destined to lose to him. If that's true, then it creates another subtle rule. Even if Imu eventually confronts Zoro or Mihawk, I don't think Imu will rely on using sword (swordsmanship). We've already seen Imu favor other forms of attack, such as firearms (bullets) and mysterious abilities, rather than drawing a blade. If Imu were to fight primarily as a swordsman and defeat either Zoro or Mihawk, it would undermine the narrative significance of both Zoro's promise and Mihawk's title. So my viewpoint is this: - Zoro's rule: Any opponent who challenges him as a swordsman is destined to lose. - Mihawk's rule: Any swordsman who challenges the World's Strongest Swordsman is destined to lose. These aren't power-scaling rules.. they're storytelling rules. They're the narrative promises Oda made the moment he gave Mihawk the title of World's Strongest Swordsman and had Zoro vow never to lose to another swordsman again... #onepiece
