And this grief is unprecedented. The only loved ones I have lost thus far are my grandparents, and two men I loved dearly (one to suicide, the other to the ocean). Shadow's death hits different because she and I belonged to each other. She slept next to me for 16 years.

And the guilt of euthanasia is weighing heavily on my heart, to be honest. I cradled her when they injected, and I felt her last heartbeat. Her erratic heart, silenced. The finality of that reality has broken me. I know I did the right thing, but it eats at me still.

I got Shadow when I was 34, what seems like a lifetime ago. Different circumstances, different me. She was the runt of the litter, and I was a first time furmom. I lost her a few weeks ago, at the ripe age of 16. To old age and inevitability. God I miss you, my love.

Palliative care and multiple organ failure were in the same sentence as Shadow, my beloved 16-year-old mixed terrier. I won't be ok in the next few days.
