Our 🆕 study on insect declines in German forests confirm a trend shown by @SebSeibold et al. 2019 (nature.com/articles/s4158…) We show that the majority of forest insects 🪳🐞declined consistently over 10 years. Led by Michael Staab (not on twitter) (1/5)

#Insectdecline in forests, too! The @CommsBio tweet below showed a more representative #forest insect than other media today! (No, fire bugs and honeybees are NOT at risk in forests, and it's not about wind turbines...)

I'll be one of the instructors at this cool workshop at @OISTedu in Japan this October, co-organized by @danlwarren & @EvanEconomo. Applications are open & I understand there are even some need-based travel scholarships available! More information here 👉 groups.oist.jp/evomorph

New paper, hot off the press! We study the relation between bite force & mandibular opening angle in insects. Ever tried to bite off more than you can chew? You are not alone. Work led by Freddie Pueffel, collab with @DrRichJohnston, and supported by @HFSP & @ERC_Research. 🧵1/n

Playing around with the Rigaku CT lab today. Here's a microCT scan of a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup that only took 14 minutes to run! (I am a bad scientist, I did not preserve the sample for future study.... 😋)

Alright, GoodFibes (detection of muscle fibers from diceCT scans in R) has been submitted to CRAN. Fingers crossed that there are no hiccups, but if you want to install locally the tarball is here: tinyurl.com/3xs537u2. #diceCT #SICB2023 @SICB_DCB_DVM

Very happy: final paper of my PhD out in Myrmecological News today! Check out their twitter thread, blog entry and of course the original article for the deeds on head anatomy of the wonderfully weird ant Tatuidris tatusia, "poneroid" evolution and mandible mechanics.
Myrmecological News@MyrmecolNews

The authors also used a 3D-printed model to study the range of motion of the ant’s mandibles. In the accompanying blog post, first author Adrian Richter @Formicadri answers a few questions and highlights the main points. @UniJena @OISTedu @KU_Leuven blog.myrmecologicalnews.org/2023/01/26/the…

Our planet is positively teeming with “little things that run the world”-invertebrates. Yet, it has been a challenge to see the big picture of how invertebrate diversity is distributed around the globe. Happy to share that, finally, we have a detailed view for one group: ants.

New research on ants has produced a treasure map for finding hidden biodiversity among other small-range species. Learn more in this week’s issue of Science Advances: fcld.ly/bq412s1
