Really fun morning celebrating @CreeksideElem and Union Elementary @myfcs at the 2026 Literacy Achievement Celebration in the Indiana Statehouse. Lots of hard work by both schools’ teachers and staff to achieve 95% passing on the IREAD-3 test!

The Reading League has just released: State-Level Guidance for The Reading League’s Curriculum Evaluation Guidelines and Curriculum Navigation Reports: Empowering States, Districts, and Schools to Make Evidence-Aligned Literacy Decisions The Reading League’s Curriculum Evaluation Guidelines (CEGs) and Curriculum Navigation Reports (CNRs) have been downloaded tens of thousands of times, guiding district leaders, educators, and policymakers in making informed decisions about literacy curricula. Our new resource, “State-Level Guidance for The Reading League’s Curriculum Evaluation Guidelines and Curriculum Navigation Reports,” builds on that impact, helping states use these documents with clarity and consistency. Grounded in transparency, equity, and continuous improvement, this guidance strengthens statewide literacy efforts and fosters sustainable, evidence-aligned literacy improvement across systems. 🎄 12 Days of Christmas: Building Better Literacy Instruction 🎄 Over the next 12 days, I’ll be sharing curated, evidence-aligned literacy resources designed to help educators move from research to instructional precision. Each resource is selected to support teachers, coaches, and leaders in making informed, effective decisions about instruction, practice, and intervention. 🔹 Day 1: A Padlet of resources related to The Instructional Hierarchy (Haring & Eaton, 1978), Types of Practice, and Cognitive Load Theory I started here intentionally. The Instructional Hierarchy provides a critical decision-making framework that helps educators determine: - What type of instruction students need - When practice is appropriate—and when it is not- - How fluency, generalization, and maintenance fit within MTSS - Why mismatched instruction leads to stalled progress When we ignore where students are in the learning process, even strong materials and good intentions fall short. This resource supports implementation fidelity and instructional alignment. 🔗 The Day 1 resource and all others to follow can be found at this link: bit.ly/Kastner12DaysO… Follow along for the next 12 days as together we unpack practical tools that strengthen literacy systems and classroom practice.

my Superintendent, assistant/interim principal/work wife, and of course Sean were all there to celebrate. I am grateful to have received this award and thankful to work with teachers and staff who put in the hard work day after day to teach our students to read.

Last night we attended the 4th Annual Indiana Educational Excellence Gala, where I was presented with the Literacy Educator Award. It sounds cliche to say I am honored and humbled by this recognition, but I truly mean it. My principal, who nominated me, was unable to attend, but

@BenisonMrs I just had a conversation this week with a teacher who was frustrated with a small group of learners and told her instruction for the concept we were discussing might look like, I do, I do, I do, we do, we do, we do, we do, you do!

So I have come to realize that: a) a lot of people don't understand, "I Do, We Do, You Do" instructional model. Some people think it is a three-step process, when in reality it is a process driven by the learning stage, where the students find themselves. I have also come to realize that just because people label it "I Do, We Do, You Do", it does not mean that is what they are doing. I have also come to realize that if one does not understand explicit teaching, one can not successfully follow the "I Do, We Do, You Do" instructional model.

@MmeLockhartLDSB @rastokke @JonathanPlucker We are following guidance from @sstollar6 and implementing the MTSS framework in an effort to improve our Tier 1 instruction and decrease the # of students who need Tier 2/3. It is A LOT of work/planning, and I've provided lots of PD to teachers. Excited to see the outcomes!

1/3 I talked to @JonathanPlucker about de-streaming & anti-acceleration in my latest episode. In addition to the inequities created since affluent parents find opportunities outside the system, "We're acting like differentiation is a molehill and it's Mount Everest."
